Inspection 2

 Lancs.
My 3.0si E85 is due it's inspection 2 shortly (its on 44k miles).
I'm sure my Indy will know what needs doing, but this is what I think should be covered in the service:
Engine / Gearbox oil, filters, plugs (brake fluid?).
Anything else?

Here's a handy list of what's involved :

http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/f3/bmw-inspection-2-dealer-checklist-t91/

Mileage wise mine is not due for another 10k but at the rate I clock up the miles that's another 10 years or more so I reckon I will get an Insp 2 done next Feb when the 2 year time bound oil service is due - I have used a good Indie for the last service and for the infamous rear springs but I will stick with the dealer for the Inspection 2 - they seem to do good deals for older zeds and whilst my Indie is cheaper I will feel more confident with BMW carrying it out - We only have one dealer down here ( Snows ) who seem very competent and have a good reputation .

Not sure if that list matches my schedule. To be honest the inspections actually cover minimally in addition to the MOT, though of course they can take things off. Brake fluid is usually extra. Transmission and diff fluids are definitely not included but I would suggest having these done.
I wouldn't say a dealer is any more trustworthy based on some users finding the original air filter despite FBMWSH...

Mine was booked into a Glasgow based BMW Dealer for Inspection II. Won't name them but it would be close to Braehead Shopping Centre.

They took all the details about 1 month ago. Still waiting on a price.

Phoned back two weeks ago and was told they didn't have any details.

Gave them the details again and still waiting on a price.

Will be cancelling it tomorrow as a local Indy is doing it next week.

If they can't even get back to me about the price of Inspection II then there's no way they'll be touching my car.

Dont like that garage at all.
Doesnt even look like a garage.

They were very knowledgeable when I had issues with the firmware on the 2003 2.5 I had. Couldn't have been more helpful but things must have changed.

I don't normally praise 'stealers' but I've only ever been satisfied with the other BMW dealer in Glasgow (the one just off the M8 at Springburn).

Thanks fellas, given me lots to think about

If you've got the schedule with the service book then have a look at that, make sure you're happy with everything on it and that they are too. i.e. Depending on the last service you may not need the cabin and/or air filters changed. Easy enough to check these yourself and decide.
Anything that isn't listed on there that you want doing add and ask for an upfront quote (quote and estimate being two different things) the same for any 'additional charge' items on the schedule. As I said, I would definitely have the box and diff fluids changed - double check the SAE viscosity required and make sure you're both on the same page as to what is going in (you may find it cheaper to get them yourself depending on their mark-up and if they carry stock).

I checked the air filter recently, as that's a good indication of whether the servicing schedule has actually been carried out. As you can see its as clean as a whistle :)

I will ask for the gear box and differential oil to be changed as you suggest (along with engine oil and filter obviously). Skelters has sent me links to oil, plugs filters etc., but I trust my Indy (been with him for years) and may just let him source the parts.

In fairness, having looked at my schedule, seems to me the air filter is only changed at insp 2... And it's an additional charge! :o

So all you're paying for over the insp 1 is spark plugs. For £160 from BMW, though their site says the air filter is included.

You do know that the side of the air filter in the pic SHOULD be spotless don't you, it's the other side that's exposed to the incoming air..
