Inspection 2 and new EML warning

Hi All

Just had a dealership inspection 2 service done (Stephen James BMW)- painful to say the least:

Inspection 2 £464
Replace worn bushes and oil vacuum hose £623..... :headbang:

This is an 2005 plate 2.0 with 39000 on clock with dealership FSH stamped into the logbook.

Ok that really hurt! And yes I should have probably gone to a non-franchise garage. Well after denting my finances heavily, four days after this work was carried out, I started the car, idle a little jumpy, and pressing the accelerator which initially caused an irregular rev pattern and on comes an amber EML light :x :headbang: Interestingly the problem appears to have resolved but light stays on- car drives ok I think.

Oh lord!! Just spent over a grand and now this. Now hand on my heart there were NO idle or rev issues PRIOR to this service. Some threads point towards oxygen sensors. Dealership has asked me bring the car back which I'm doing in 2 days.

Any advice on how to handle this issue would be great.

Cheers

Does sound like an O2 sensor unfortunately. Not sure that they would have done anything to cause it, they just seem to go.

Thanks for this.

I think I'm suffering from the huge expense  I guess O2 sensors are not checked in an inspection 2 inasmuchas if there are no faults on the diagnostic, they're left alone.

Am I looking at another fortune :tumbleweed: ?? Apparently there are 4 sensors?!?

Time to resurrect that credit card.....

Yeah no faults showing, then they wouldn't be be checked. There are four but only one will have gone, couple of hundred quid to sort probably :(

Ouch! More Ouch! :!:

Was this for O2 sensors on an M!! I'm doomed.... Fingers crossed it will be ok (how many times have I said that about my car and it all went :fuelfire: )......

Thanks :D

That's just inspection, still warranted for other work! When I move on from this car I might try bangernomics, could buy a shed to run for the price of a service!

Holy sh*t!! That's crazy. I may have to take the plunge with non-franchise garages after this. Some in my locality have good reviews.

I just dropped the Z to BMW, £106 for the diagnostic alone (which was done last week!) and then damages after that

Anyway, good luck and hope all goes well with your M. That is huge £££ for just an inspection.

Cheers

Update:

I am outraged!! Was called at lunchtime today by Stephen James BMW to be landed with a £900 extra bill (so that's £2000 in a week) being told that the EML light diagnostic indicated problem with some components under the rockercover and something else about a valve somewhere...... all this 4 days after an inspection 2!! I will provide details later.

All this on a 2.0 zed with 39k driven.... doesn'texactly instil much faith.

I am hurt. Can I please ask what others would do in this situation? The car was driving just fine with no warning lights prior to this service!

Gonna go drown my sorrows....

Update 2:

I am another £884 poorer today. Add this to the inspection 2, bushes, oil vacuum hose comes to a toal of £1971 (+2 cab fares as no pick up/ drop off/ courtesy car).

The EML light was due to the following:

Faulty eccentric shaft sensor- replaced
V V T servomotor- replaced
Also the cam cover gasket was replaced.

So, in summary, pre-inspection 2 service, the car is running with no faults. During i-2 service 2 faults are found which in total comes to £1087. Four days later and the EML light comes on due to the faults above.....

Someone please give me some faith!!

:tumbleweed:

If you're not running under a warranty I'm sure it would have been considerably cheaper to do the work with an Indy, main dealer labour rates are pretty ridiculous. I feel for you buddy as that is a major chunk of change for a relatively standard, low mile car and given its age a major surprise. I imagine it's just bad luck, unfortunately there probably is some connection between the new faults and the service, maybe just weaknesses triggered by the stresses of the insp2 service. Not the first time this sort of thing happened I'm afraid!

Thanks for your comments. I am rather poor now for a while.... gonna be beans on toast for a while!

I guess it is a little early for an Inspection 2 but this zed is pushing 6 years and it was a calculated decision which I guess 'unmasked' other issues. She is driving a lot of a lot better, even more so that the 18 months ago when I first picked her up with an inspection 1 service done prior to purchase :driving:

But one thing is for sure- no more dealerships for me. On my modest earnings, I fear I will be left having my car repossessed  !

Cheers for all your comments :)

Replacing the eccentric shaft sensor and motor at the same time only shows they don't actually know what's wrong with it.both of these things are not a particularly common problem in real life.

I guess the dealership mechanics have to comply with what a computer tells them where a potential fault lies. I am no skilled mechanic, but I am left wondering whether I should get in touch with BMW UK and let them know what happened.

My experience of similar scenarios is that big brother always wins.

But like the Murphy's......

Thanks for you comments 8)

Just read through the thread and can only sympathise with the situation! Absolutely gutting when a series of reasonably expensive things come up on your car in such a short space of time and sum up to one massive bill. I can't help but think how the money could hav ebeen put towards buying a newer car. But what can you say, **** happens and we have to accept it! Let's just hope it's ages before anything else goes wrong.
