Inspection 1 - current prices @dealers?

Whose to say whether the dealers or the indy's are doing it correctly/incorrectly...?

How do you to know they put the correct oil in,changed gearbox/diff oils ?

Unless you physically see them do it at either,it would be hard to tell...

I dont think £269 at a dealers is bad really, considering that a decent percentage of that price is parts and VAT..

£269 isn't bad, but I'd question whether they were able to thoroughly check everything that they are supposed to.

Like what Steve ?

Most of inspection one is just visual check anyway....

Why would you think an Indy is better than a BMW trained tech at the job ?

PGF just stated they didn't do the valve clearances... Which is a pretty important part of the Ins service.

To be quite honest most cars will run and run with just an oil and filter change but buying a car like an M then scrimping on servicing for the sake of £200/£250 doesn't seem logical to me.

I do 6/7k miles a year purchased in July 2012, had an Ins II done this summer, I'll need oil and BF In 2016 then I'll be sorted to 2018. Total cost <£1k for 6 years hardly worth cutting corners in my opinion.

A used S54 engine is circa £3k and then labour on top to install it and most engine work on the M as a result of failure (although rare) usually costs £1.5k upwards so to me cutting corners is illogical especially if you intend to keep the car yourself for an extended period of time.

I think its pretty much accepted that for £269 you are not going to get your valve clearances done as well as an Insp 1 service at a main dealer or Indy..

Inspection 2 is when they now get the valve clearances done...Rightly or wrongly that is what seems to be the norm..

It was mentioned on a thread the other day that it could mean that clearances would not be checked for 10yrs+ on a low mileage vehicle, and that was deemed as fine..

I dont think anyone is scrimping..... Unless your trying to save money by going to an Indy because its cheaper...

Valve clearances form part of the Ins I service the only difference between Ins I and Ins II is the spark plugs, gearbox oil, diff oil (air filter maybe?).

So getting an Ins I service without valve clearances isn't an Ins I. If you don't do the mileage then technically you run an oil service and leave the indicator alone as the clearances are mileage based not time.

I used an Independant as got a far better feeling talking to him then I did a main dealer plus George at Technosport has an M3 race car, also had a Z4M coupe which he had purchased when I was there and numerous other cars in the workshop including an E34 M5, CSL, E60 M5 and the like.

At the end of the day each to their own but the service available for £269 without clearances is not an Ins I as specified in the service handbook regardless of what the website/dealer says. Just shows how incompetent main dealers are when it comes to this sort of stuff in my opinion.

If people still proceed then it's their choice but what is being advertised and carried out appears to be incorrect hence the "cheap" price.

If guess if people want to have their valve clearances checked every other service and incur the £300+ bill on top of their normal service, then thats their perogative ..

I guess it also says about only putting Castrol 10w60 TWS in the engine, because no other oil will do......

Ya pays your money and takes your choice..

All this is going to make it harder to verify the service history of a car. The service book just has a tick for each type of service, and checking the invoice for the inspection one my car had in 2009 doesn't detail much either.

If this is BMW's stance now they must have something in writing to give to customers. Would be interesting to see what they do in the states.

Service done it ?BMW though should keep buyers hapy though

Yep, an inspection 1 on an s54 without valve clearances checked is quite simply not an inspection 1. http://www.approved.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/owner/service_value/mcars/moreinfo/0,,1312___,00.html

The fact that a bmw dealer has carried out the incorrect service on the car is why I and many others would rather take out cars elsewhere and get them worked on by people that actually know about these cars.

Explains needing 13 valve adjustments at inspection 2, full main dealer service history to that point and suspect the cam cover had never been removed in 44k miles. Sounded quiet and ran sweet as a nut afterwards so if your S54 is a bit tappy it's probably wanting some adjustments.

For £269 after you've taken parts and VAT into the equation, it doesn't leave much time to carry out the visual checks would it?

As for why I think Indys are better. They rely on repeat business, word of mouth and reputation to get work.

I wondered how long it would be before we had another Indy v BMW thread. Just take it where you want to and leave it at that. Any garage is only as good as the person doing the work whether it is a BMW garage or an independent.

Whereas main dealers dont ?

What do you think would happen to a tech in a main dealer who didnt carry out everything to the letter, and subsequently got found out that things hadnt been changed etc etc ? He would lose his job...
Its not fair to inply that the guy isnt doing his job properly because of price..

Dont get me wrong,i dont particular like main dealers..... But there are some clever lads in them, there has to be. Think how incredibly difficult it is to fix a modern car.

i have worked in dealers upto management level, have worked in Indy's..... There is good and bad everywhere..

+1

At the end of the day / they have quited a price of 269 on the M and on their own website it states that valve clearance is done on insp I. So therefore I am expecting this to be done.

Right?

That's what I posted on Page one of this thread.

Think TomK hit the nail on the head though with this url]http://www.approved.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/owner/service_value/mcars/moreinfo/0,,1312___,00.html[/url]

The one posted linked to the reg plate lookup is really for non ///M cars, and I wouldn't expect any dealer not to point this out as a mistake and refer to the other pricing.

Don't get me wrong though, I will be calling them and trying it for my inspection 2 if the prices are the same in a couple of months. If not or they want to cut corners then I will be going to an Indi.
