Inspection 1 - current prices @dealers?

I think these cars are getting to the point where a specialist stamp is less of an issue come resale. The quality of work undertaken (certainly the communication and customer care as to what work was actually carried out) has been better than the main dealers in my experience.

So had the call back from BMW and they have booked me in for the Insp 1 @ £269.
They said the valve clearances needed to be done will require the car for 2 days and so i have a loan car for the period also.
I thought the clearances were only done on the Insp II?

Oh well - happy days if this all pans out...
Booked in for the 19th @ Sytner Sunningdale in South Ascot (my regular)

Sad but true..

Not sure this is true. These cars are fairly rare and normally sought after by enthusiasts. Most enthusiasts realise that you can get better services from reputable specialists.

Good luck sir. The valve clearance checking is reportedly a 3 hour job, not sure how they can do a thorough job for such a cheap price?

Maybe they have realised that the servicing prices were silly and are trying to get customers back to the main dealers.

While your car is in sir would you like to test the new M4.

As I've said earlier, the prices listed two weeks ago were almost double (on M cars) what they are listed as now but they didn't have offer next to them.

i would mark the cam cover with a small blob of paint in an inconspicuous place just to see if they have removed the cover....

Non dealer history is brought up on here time and time again... The majority insist on it, especially with such low miles.

As enthusiasts we also know how important that dealer stamp is to a new prospective buyer.. If I went to look at a car and its history was non dealer and done at various Indy's I would use it as a negotiation point to lower the price,or maybe :| not buy it..

Who knows whether has used the correct oil, OEM filters or even have the info to do the correct items per service?

This is very interesting.... I would definitely try and make them do a proper service as they're clearly identifying the car and giving you a price. Not my fault if they quote the wrong price.

Also re dealer history if it is a car with less than 50K on the clock I generally expect main-dealer only. I have no issue with independents but the issue is as a buyer I do not know if your local indie is a decent chap who takes his time, has an immaculate workshop and knows an S54 like the back of his hand, or is some cheap "don't worry those are just guidelines" type who'll stamp anything for £50

I see your point, I just don't agree with it. It's easy to check how reputable an Indy is. Most will use OEM parts. If I saw stamps from "Stevo's Auto Services" maybe I'd be suspicious, but stamps from Munich Legends, Iridium Engineering, CPC Engineering etc, I'd have no concerns and would favour this car over BMW history.

Also with regards to impacting re-sale, most cars posted on here that query the service history, if all done on time and with reputable specialists, will be given the thumbs up from the community here.

For a standard car, i.e. BMW 320d, I'd agree dealer history is a must as anybody will be buying them, for Z4M's most prospective buyers are enthusiasts and understand the benefits of using Indy's.

When using Munich Legends they phoned me to tell me that the car was finished and ran through a list of all the common problems that Z4M's / S54's suffer and said all was fine. As i said the people at Vines Guildford didn't even know what a Z4M was.

Ahhh

Munich legends ...surely that's arguing against your own point of view?

Never had any bad press eh

My local BMW dealer took some video and posted it on their site for me to see what they had done. I would ask if they can do the same when checking the shims. Also ask for the shim report to be kept when you take it in.

At the end of the day we have no choice but to trust them to a degree. If my dealer agrees to the pricing it will be going there for its inspection 2 in March though.

Have you been down to ML recently, and more specifically since the new owners took over? Really is a great place in my opinion. Always been very helpful and they know the S54 very well. Every time I've visited they have all sorts of BMW / Alpina exotica there. The owner (Dan) writes for Straight Six magazine and is editing the magazine for the London / South East section of the BMW Car Club. I know ML used to have a bad rep, but that was with the previous owners.

As I said, using a specialist with people that I like / trust and feel reassured by their enthusiasm and knowledge, or a BMW dealer who doesn't really know what my car is, am unable to speak to anybody with a technical nouse and likely have some 1st year apprentice fumbling around in my engine bay.

But yeh, I'd rather have 'the' stamp :?

To be honest i have only been to ML once, its the other end of the country for me..

I went to inspect an E30 M3 for a client....

It was a polished (not very well as it happened) turd... Had incorrect parts fitted, chain rattling and the inner sills where crunchy around the seatbelt belts... Came with full MOT though...

I wasnt impressed with their pontificating and attitude they they knew everything, and everyone else was a mere dog truffle on the shoe of ML...

Anyway..... I havent been recently, and may never go again.Everything still looks overpriced.

I never went with the old owners so can't comment, but have never felt any sense of pretension.

As for the cars being overpriced. Something is only overpriced if it doesn't sell....

I've dropped it off and they are doing it for £269 but they called later and said that the Valve Clearances are not done on an Insp. 1 now, they're done on an Insp. 2 - New guidelines from BMW apparently. Has anyone got this before?

They called me when I was at my grandparents so I didn't have internet access and I'd left the book with them to stamp so I didn't have the Insp. 2 list to check whether this was there originally.

This is apparently is to bring it in line with the E46 M3...

Figured that I'd have a word when I go back and pick it up tomorrow.
