Well...my first month of BMW ownership is not going as well as I had hoped for. Took the car in last week for Inspection 1 and the list of items that needed to be fixed was not too long but, expensive.
Alignment
Light Plate Bulb
Vanos (that was the rattle sound between 3,000 rpm & 4,000 rpm that I had another thread on http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=31500)
High Pressure Hydraulic Steering Hose Leak
Oil Leak on a valve (not sure where but, towards the rear of the engine and not visible unless you have a mirror)
Oil dye to locate the oil leak
2 Spark Plug Coils
TCU
The original cost of the Inspection 1 was $841 usd ($537 pounds), the additional $6k is from the above list of repairs.
Luckily...I decided at time of purchase to get the extended warranty through a third party company called Zurich. They are going to cover some of the big expenses such as the TCU and vanos replacement. I am going to have to cover the Hydraulic and Oil leaks out of pocket.

Besides that, hope all of you are having a great day!

I must say a bulk of that cost is replacing the vanos. Since warranty is going to cover it, I don't mind. If warranty had not covered it I would have done the work myself and bought the parts from here http://www.drvanos.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=5&Itemid=6

Added mileage - 23,700

wow - thats a lot mate - where did you buy it ? and what reg

If its less than a month old i'd be giving it back mate :o

The vanos does rattle around that rpm anyway and you'll hear it more as there is not alot of sound proofing material in the z

I had the vanos unit replaced in mine at service 1 but it was rattling in general not at specific rpm.

Mine was replaced under warranty (BMW good will) even though my warranty had run out. All my service adviser was interested in was that the car had had the 1000mile service and had been serviced at BMW throughout its life - they charged me £200 labour

They said if I had used an indie, BMW would not want to know - my milage was 21000 on a '07 plate

mitch

Mitch - 07 plate

can't give it back since I purchased it "as is" but, that is why I got the extended warranty.

Where are you located? Maybe you should hit up a reputable indy shop, dealers charge $120/hr!

I am in Washington State and this is coming from an Indy shop called Eastside Bavarian.

At this point and time I have no reason to doubt their integrity.

Here is a link to their site

Hi Jason - good job you have the warranty mate

How was the car running before you took it in for the service ? And what is a TCU ?

When you say you bought it as is - you mean you bought it knowing it had a few issues ?

Hope it doesn't put you off mate, they are a great drive :driving:

Mitch the car is running just fine before and after. These are minor items that seem to cost a lot to get them into good Nic(not sure if that is the correct English slang). The TCU is the brain for the blue tooth system.

When test drove it I did notice that it pulled to the right, besides that the other items are hardly noticeable unless you have a trained eye.

I love the car and do not have second thoughts.

Warranties are good.
Based on that second photo. I'd say you are about to get bushwhacked by a Subaru club gone rogue :o

Cheers from a Washington Expat in Germany.

Maybe they should go back to non-VANOS systems like on the e34 M5 and have you do valve clearance checks every 10,000 miles :headbang:

But it works so well? meaty torque at most rpm.

Anyway, I thought Vanos probs only affected the S54 on pre or 2001 models?

The s38b38 in my M5 didn't have VANOS and had more torque through the range than the s54 does - although the valves clearances needed to be done regularly to maintain the performance. Quiet was not good on this engine as it meant the clearances were too tight, but sudden, noticeable performance increase usually meant they'd gone too loose.

Each generation is more reliable as they engineer out the weak spots, but it wouldn't be cost effective to get 100% - the probably run to Six Sigma (or Seven if they're really anal).

After all we're only talking about possibly 5-10 cases in 10000, compared to the 1 in 10 of the original system.

If you ever go over to m3cutters you'll read of some VANOS issues on various ages of E46 M3s. More head gasket failures seem to be going on right now too, there's a couple of current threads worth reading. Basically know the sound of your engine and if that changes start to investigate.
