To do the valve clearance check properly, I'd prefer they didn't rush it and used the fully allocated 3 hours - so at BMW rates (£100-£140+vat/hour) you can see where the extra cost comes from.
 
I used Elms in Cambridge, who are highly regarded, especially by the CSL boys. £669 for Ins1, £899 for Insp2.

For the reputation and price if was worth the journey from north London, will definitely be using them again too.

Factoring in the 100 for brake fluid service, 35 for MOT cost and PVR providing his own oil - his quote is not far off this price.

I do like how this dealer make a big thing about the valve clearance work. I guess I'm paranoid about it being a labour only job and any dealer could easily say "yep it's done" yet nothing was. I know this wood be immoral / but you know...

So this is just a "check". What of something needs to be adjusted - guess that's part of the price? Anyone had theirs adjusted?

What about any parts during this part of the service? Are they included if needed?
 
The valve adjustments are the shims, so if required they are replaced.

That 661 incl vat is a very good price, it does say it would do brake fluid if required. Wonder if that is extra than, but it does not appear to be but a bit strange that if it is not needed, you would not get it so why would the price be unchanged whether you have it or not.

They could always hide behind the fact that the car is newer than 2006 though ...
 
When I took mine in for insp 1 I asked for a written report of the clearances (on the advice of someone on this excellent forum). I received a printed list of the inlet and outlet clearances together with the nominal sizes and tolerances.
As well as it being evidence that the job had been done, it's always something to keep with my cars paperwork and looks good to a potential buyer in the future.

Just picked up the car. All valve clearance ok, no shims required. Secondly, even though I provided the oil - they did not use it :D

Only comment on invoice - tyre sealant passed expiry date. Oh well.
 
Just had mine done for £699 too .. effectively an Inspection 3 though, 66k :oops:

Didn't ask about the shim report but have always wanted to.. same Dealer has done all 3 so I'm hoping if I did there'd be 3 reports, what's the chances?

If you don't ask for them then they'll rarely be recorded, and even then they'll be discarded straight after the job.

I always ask for them, as it goes some way to assuring me they've actually taken the time to measure them.

Think my last one (at 74625 miles) required 3 shims - 1 on intake, 2 on exhaust.

I don't think the report is something they do as standard as I've always been handed a basic A4 sheet of paper with a hand-drawn grid measurements (before/after), rather than anything official looking.
