I haven't been there for over a year - sounds like Hell on earth :o
The only reason I go into Brighton now is to visit my mother

Lots of the local business are suffering and complaining about the anti-car policies of the council deterring visitors but, with two universities, there are lots of students who will vote green because it's trendy

Well, they have lost my business. It is a 20 minutes drive to Brighton for me (so make that 4 hours by public transport Bing :poke: ), and I used to go there early on a sunday morning when the weather was nice. Overnight, they changed the parking charge from £6 for 2 hours, which I already thought was madness, to £14 for the same.

Swore I would never come back again.

Don't forget the other crap emanating from the car-hating, lycra-clad green weirdo council...
- the blanket 20mph speed limit...
- the narrowing of lots of dual carriageway to the point where a car can't overtake a lorry so they can have wide cycle lanes...
- spending a fortune routing cycle lanes behind bus stops...
- expensive cyclist detection signs displaying the daily count of the self-righteous bastards as they waft past in a cloud of lentil fart...

:headbang:

You sound like Clarkson!

20mph around schools is just fine as are speed cameras. 30mph dual carriageways are not.

It may sound like Clarkson but that's because Brighton council are actively anti-car and it's now a genuinely frustrating place to take a car to.

- It's not 20mph just around schools, it's 20mph everywhere and for 24 hours a day. Only exceptions are the 4 main roads in/out of town which are 30mph (some are dual carriageways)

- I don't mind cycle lanes but it's stupid when they've stolen so much space from a dual carriageway that a car can no longer pass a lorry

- and I didn't even mention speed cameras but, apparently, GATSOs aren't certified under 30mph so can't be used to enforce the 20mph limit

I only moved from Brighton about 10 years ago and traffic in Brighton used to have a natural flow pattern that could jam up occasionally but by-and-large worked well. Now there are so many bus priority lanes and cycle lanes that run against or across the flow of traffic that all they seem to do is stop traffic flowing and cause it to jam up. My mother is 76 and doesn't drive (she's never had a licence), she walks or uses the bus and even she's started complaining about the chaos on the roads.

Our's remain at 20mph around schools 24x7x365 - there's no reverting to 30/40mph on weekends, holidays, evenings, nights, early morning.

Fortunately there's no speed cameras/enforcement outside of school hours, so it's (currently) safe to proceed at an appropriate speed for the conditions :P

They're even narrowing 4 lane roads down to 2 lanes by putting extra wide chevrons down the middle. There's no speed reduction as they were always NSL/60mph as they didn't have a proper central reservation to be classified dual-carriageways.

Not been to Brighton for 20 years. Don't here anything here that going to get me back there. Sounds like the place is being run by the MRL party.

& I don't mean M Roadster.

Sod Brighton then. When's the next SE meet?! :driving:

Well volunteered for organising it inkey$

 Jembo - I'd like to attend one first and know what I'd be letting myself in for first! Maybe a mini SE London/Kent meet could work.

Not a single one. 3.5 years as a forum member. Lifer status. About to pick up my third Zed.

Shocking isn't it.

I think it's because they always seem to be over in West London and I know what an b*ll ache it is getting across town via potholed tarmac - even at 5am in the morning.

We're doing a good job of increasing the frequency of SE meets, so we'll be seeing you soon

Just make sure you're ready for a mid hoon refuel if Jembo is in charge

+1. On the way to Silverstone, Jembo leading the convoy.... "Yes, we're taking it easy" VROOOOOOM

"WTF did he go?" :?

Yep, he did that to me and Jan last year on the way to Silverstone. Lots of sensible talk about 80-85 on motorways and then proceeded to take the M26 up it's arse with a yard broom
