"The BMW Z4 also has a few neat tricks. For starters you can take the convertible top off by just hitting the UNLOCK key twice and holding it a third time.
You can also put the top back up by clicking the BMW button, found on the key, 5 times"

Is this right? I never knew...
Someone please find the energy to go out and find out for me...
If this is just old news just tell me and then wait for this thread to be deleted.
:D

The first bits true on later models, or if you've had the key programmed, although its only two presses, hold the second one.....not sure about the second part though, I think it just locks the bloody thing! 8)

Is a 2006 a "later model"? Post facelift..
I cannot wait to try it out...thing is my key only works from like a few meters away...so i ll look like a demic just waiting there..
But still...i do love a gimick :P

I believe you have an after-market module fitted. If your able to close the roof with the key without holding a button

Ive not tried it on mine yet...was just browsing on tinternet and saw it..

Sorry just re read, you'll need an after market module fitted to be able to do that or have you key reprogrammed but then you will need to hold the button down constantly

Oooowww..shamee
Okay thanks :)

Not sure about an 06 - check yr tail lights, if they are the long thin horizontal red rears, as opposed to the round ones, then its facelift and yr key should already be programmed....just press it one to unlock then once again and hold, wait 3-4 seconds and the roof will operate - keep the button held til its fully down.

It doesn't work in reverse, I've just checked.

If your key doesn't work unless very close to the car its likely its not been used much as it charges automatically when its in the ignition.......I assume you've got both keys?

Yeah mine is facelift..
Wow didn't know it recharges when in the ignition..how clever is that (small things amaze me sometimes) i must be using the key that the previous owner didnt use...so maybe it was just short range for the 1st few days i had it
Gutted about it not working in reverse..but at least it does something.
Thing is my dad was told when he got his new car (m3 convertible) that he shouldnt operate roof without engine running..
Or is this purely just BMW being over cautious..
Btw i kno this isn't a major topic...im just curious :)

no problemo, theres no such thing as a stupid question IMHO.....re the charging issue, sounds like a thorough read of the handbook wouldn't go amiss

I have heard people say that putting the top down/up with the engine turned off is a big drain on the battery. That said I know of at least one person (IMZ4N) that will show off his reinhold module putting the top up and down several times at various meets and I don't think he ever had a problem starting up.

Woots - your zed is a facelift as it has a totally different front end on it, most obvious by the sloped sides to the lower grille. As mentioned the rear tail lights are different as a re a few other minor items. (The '06 plate would make it a facelift too)

You can cycle the roof many times without flattening the battery, so long as it's in good condition. Putting it up and down a couple of time will have no ill effect, so enjoy. However of course on a cold damp morning, on a tired battery then a different matter. Still after the mileage on Sunday that won't be a problem :D

Some report that their keys don't work from far off and I don't think there is anything you can do about it. Mine just happens to be OK from 25m+, but that's unusual. I believe being in a direct line with the sensor, no obstacles in the way can all help.

I know you're just learning but did you know you can have a whole range of items programmed in for the car and each key? Speak to BMW and they will print off a list FOC of what you model and year can do.

Point the key at your head, you will be able to open the roof from 20 metres away.

No lie.

Only really works if you are in doors so people watching do not think you are mad. Maybe they are right, who knows :poke:

yeah, touching the key under your chin on your throat and pressing the button extends the range significantly.

My mate does that with his remote for the barriered parking at his flat: his is a good 75metres away from the entrance, but he has line of sight from his balcony. Holding the fob thing against his head is enough to activate the barrier. Human antenna FTW

Hi Guys,

Mine seems to unlock / lock doors from at least 20m or so away - but to open the roof I need to be quite close to the car for it to do anything..

Also, if I use the key to drop the top the windows go all the way down, and when opened from within the car they go half way down.. Is this just the way the key has been set up?

I have a '56-plate Z4 and the roof will open with the Key - took me a year to find out though!
Just point it at the car and hold the unlock button, I don't think you even have to press it twice. You have to make sure the signal is strong to the receiver which is under the rear-view mirror. If the signal is interrupted the roof will stop opening, which is quite annoying, and you'll have to try again. I use it all the time now before I get to the car.

so what allows the roof to open with the key then, do you need the roof module and the key reprogrammed, where those modules standard on some versions?

Ive had mine programmed by an independent. no need for any additional roof module. The downside is that you have to keep your finger on the button while the operation completes. The add in modules allow for a one touch like operation

ahh, got ya! :)

So I can get it programmed then without buying the module, I'll have to find somewhere local to do that.
