After being away from the forum for some time due to work and life getting in the way I'm now back on board. Seems like a lot of members have joined since I was last on- be good to get to know you all and to catch up with old friends.

It is with sadness that my returning post is related to crashing my z. :!: Unfortunately on the way to work last week (i was using the z to commute as better half had borrowed the X5 as her beetle was getting worked on -another expensive story.) I ran into the back of someone. Intially I thought it would be ok as there was minimal damage to his car but unfortunately it had a towbar which has done a fair bit of damage. I was able to pull the headlight back out so I could drive the car.- I'm paying for the repair my self as I fear the insurance may write it off (those who know me know my z is a keeper)

As you can see the front panel is bent out of shape (these are like hens teeth and over £400 new) The body shop recokon the bumper is repairable and will plasti weld light brackets. They would rather I got a new front panel (the part the the bumper fixes to) however if I can provide a spare light for them to line things up to they say they may be able to straighten mine. (if anyone has a light I can borrow for a few weeks it would be much appreciated!)

On way to see body shop.

Cheers Sars- missed the place and decided it was time to get back into it as lifes too short not to do what makes you happy!

Cheers andy- just want it fixed now- makes me realise just how much it means to me as I have so many happy memories from over the last 8 years :driving: Having to use insurance for repairing his car (he insisted) But wont let them near my pride and joy.

That's a proper shame :(

What needs doing? I fixed similar looking damage on my daughters car and got away with a bumper and several brackets that caused the misalignment of the light mount and wing - hope the fix goes OK.

Thanks Jonny, and Ewazix. Ideally needs a front panel (the one that sits between the lights and has the radiator bolted to it) But as they are daftly hard to find I may get away with using a light as a measure of alignment then get it straightened.

If i was using my insurance company to fix the other parties car, i'd be wanting them to fix mine too.

You can take your car anywhere to be repaired, not just their approved bodyshops

I know what you mean but as I'm getting married this year I'd bumped excess up on the z so may not be worth the risk of them writing it off- going to see cost wise what it will come to.

Is this the rare piece that you need? Front bumper carrier?

Welcome back to the forum. Sorry about the bump.

You've had that car a while haven't you. I bought my 1st zed (2.2) back in 2008 and remember asking you for advice on your experience.

If you plan to keep then let them write it off. You can buy it back at around 20% of the value and use the payout to repair. Quids in as they say.

I considered this but they wouldnt guarantee I would be allowed to buy it back. Wont take the risk as I'm as bad as Jony Essex when it comes to my z :P

Yeah I suspect that would ultimately make the car harder to insure- it's mad what they will write a car off for these days!

And you'd have a write off registered on the HPI against the car  nein danka.

But if you plan to keep and pay 20% of its value then I see no problem. Even if you sold it with that photo evidence I don't see it being a major issue either.

I know but my only worry is like I say them not allowing me to buy it back- couldn't take watching my z being broken up for parts or someone else fixing and having it.

On a positive note I had the cracked strut brace mount fixed under BMW warranty a while ago, as a point of ref for others affected BMW did this as good will at Synter Sheffield, Sandal group refused.
