I’ll never sleep again

As long as you can stay alive, riding a bike makes you a better car driver IMO.

Definitely can be worrying when they first start driving :|
My oldest girl is such a crazy driver we paid for her to have a supercar day at Thruxton a few years back, they have a instructor who marks them for driving abilities, after a few laps in the Porsche the instructor got out and told us ...." she's pretty fearless isn't she".......fair play she a marked 8/10 average for all the different driving skills......unfortunately the instructor should have never told her "she's a natural ", especially as next up was the Formula Renault...........bad bad move.......I can remember lap one ( we were watching from the control tower viewing area) going like a bullet out of a gun, lap 2 she managed 3 overtakes........lap 3 ......she overtook 2 more cars on back straight and as she disappeared out of my sight was trying to make a final overtake before the chicane...........lap4 .....she doesn't appear? " look dear, their waving the black flags for someone ".........it was at that point I noticed a bent ( missing front nose cone and spoiler) single seater being flagged into the pits!!! You guessed it, my daughters lunging overtake into the chicane hadn't worked out!!!!! The Other single seater she hit never made it back to the pits!!! ( but i believe the driver wasnt injured just shacken up when a slick tyre appeared on his car)Apparently when handing back her race suit they advised her that all future bookings from her WILL BE DECLINED.........but happy to say 5 years on and she's never had another shunt and has a clean driving licence

I must admit I am a biker but would not be too happy if either of my kids wanted to ride (at least not yet).
It is a lot more difficult to fall off a car.

Agree.....my oldest speed crazy daughter had a moped when she was at University........by the hand of God she somehow went through that episode without incident, just the cyclist she had the head on crash with when using her moped in the cycle lane on Brighton Sea front, in her defence she wasn't aware that only NON motorised bikes were allowed on them :headbang:

Well blow me down with a feather!
My daughter PASSED today! I was NOT expecting that! First time aswell. Clever girl.

Good for her.

First time passes seem to be quite rare these days.

Ah yes but having spoken to her about 'the test' it would seem......
NO emergency stop was required
NO reversing around a corner
NO three point turn (or equivalent)
NO hill start (admittedly difficult to find somewhere to do it in the Lincolnshire fens)
NO opening the bonnet and pointing out oil, coolant, etc

She drove into a pub car park by mistake and only got a 'minor' mark! :o

I am wondering whether the massive backlog in driving tests because of Covid, means they just want shot of 'em so will pass anyone!

Obviously I won't show her this post!

now get that wallet out n pony up the extra for her insurance and the tramadol to keep SWMBO calm

Been doing the "ah now she has passed her premium goes up by £5,000,000 a year" conversations with the insurance already.

Ironically, she now can't drive as her original insurance is invalid until I re-mortgage the house. I can't drive the car either until I stump up the increased premium!

She couldn't stand there too long as the bloody thing would have poured some kind of liquid on her shoes!

Surely you can drive it if you take her off the insurance and then add her back on when you get a sensible quote.?

I would look around and cancel if you can get the insurance cheaper elsewhere

yeah as soon as they pass their learner insurance is invalid (and that includes your cover as well). Well worth looking at these black box companies as they generally work out a lot cheaper.

Driving instructors have always been akin to football referee's, each sees each incident differently and applies their own interpretation of the rules.
Some absolutely shocking decisions too.
After watching the Inbetweeners Simon do his test, it does seem plausible such situations happen as it can be hard to see how some people passed a test.

On a test drive last week I had a customer go the wrong way round a roundabout. Interesting moment for myself and her husband.

Embarrassingly there was a cry of, "FFS woman, what are you bloody doing?"

Obviously the husband had enough sense to keep quiet though......

Congrats on your daughter passing her test Pondy

Nice to see that someone from the family can see something through to the end

When the wee fella passed his test we went from Collingwood learners insurance to Smart Wheels (black box type thing) and it wasn’t too spiteful.

[ref]Pondrew[/ref], Ori phoned me last week and we were talking about this. He told me of a product that I’d never heard of. It’s an additional product to a basic insurance. You/the Mrs have your £250 policy and your daughter takes out an additional policy only for when she’s driving the car. Still wasn’t cheap but Ori said manageable and not as dear as insuring the conventional way. He’d be able to give you much more detail

I bought a car for them to learn in before they could drive, so it was in my name, then I added them as learners and when they passed, added them as drivers. Was about £650 for my daughter to be added as a driver with me being the policy holder.

We did all use that car as it was great to have a car that you could actually park without having a heart attack when walking back to a car park and seeing what is next to you.

Her car has been insured in her name since she got it/ her provisional licence. Me and her mum are named drivers on her policy. The idea was that after a year (hopefully) she would get a year's NCB.
So I have paid the extra £800 on her existing policy until renewal to hopefully get a years NCB.
I did find cheaper quotes, cheapest was £1,600 a year but it would have meant cancelling her current policy and losing eight months towards a NCB.

I spent 2 hours yesterday and this morning on the phone to "specialist young drivers" brokers to compare. Both came in at over £4,000! :o Waste of time they were!

Sticking with the same company at least earns the no claim, after a year (including provisional) it is on the statement, so then you can move around with that 1 year on there. Good plan.

Strangely though, on my Z4 I had 0 no claim, and on renewal of the premium (6 months later on a multi car), it had 1 years no claim on it, even though it was 6 months.
