Ho often should you chance the ignition coils?

My car is on 124,000 miles now and have never been done. (i got the car with 13,000 miles on so doubt they had been changed before)

Thanks,
simon

You can replace them for piece of mind or wait until one fails, AFAIK there is no set time or milage. They are not usually considered a consumable item like plugs etc. When you start to see cracks in them, even if they have not failed, it’s time!

ok cool.

So its not like they slowly lose their performance over time?

Not really, when they crack and start to arc obviousy the electricity will take the ‘easy’ path to earth but up until then they remain fairly work or don’t work!

My Z4 has 103000 miles on it. I've owned it almost 9 years and done about 55000 of those and I'm pretty sure the coils are originals (*except one).

About a year and a half ago one *coil packed up without warning. A new one was purchased, in stock from ECP and although I can't recall the price, I'm pretty sure it was around £20. All was well again.

As one had packed up I was concerned the others would follow suit, so I got a spare and kept it in the boot, along with the tools to change it. It's still in the boot.

My advice, buy a spare and leave in the boot, along with the very minimal tools needed for the 5 minute change, should one fail.

I don’t think any tools at all are needed to change a coil are they? :?

I wouldnt bother until they show signs that theyre going. E.g. misfire or hesitation under load at low revs. Cheap enough from ecp and take 5 mins to change.

May as well change plugs at the same time though
