iDrive Navigation Map Update

Thanks Moonshine.

We don't have any postcode entry on our navigation currently, which I'm assuming gets added as part of the FW update. I was very surprised by this and just assumed it was there, as even our 04 VW Golf had 5 digit postcode entry.

We should have negotiated the map and FW upgrade as part of the deal when buying the car, along with swapping the 296 style wheels :(

Does this system do the full UK post code entry and not just the German five figure jobbie?
I only ask as I am getting my new to me E85 mid July - I will have a shed load of other questions by then no doubt!

It doesn't. There are knock off nav discs that have a modified poi database of all the full postcodes but they are not integrated into the main nav system

Tapatalking...

Finger trouble - I meant my new to me E89 I (prof nav)

Ah the evils of using a pc and a glass of red at the same time! :D

I asked for an upgrade when I placed the order for mine but they wouldn't budge! So it looks like I'm going to be stuck with the maps and firmware as fitted Dec 10.

We had a full software update completed on our Z4 on Wednesday this week by a local independent workshop in Byfleet, Surrey. They use the same systems that the main dealer uses, but didn't charge us the ridiculous dealer rates. We had all the software updated to the latest versions, iDrive, DCT etc as well as having the latest 2012 European maps installed. It took around 7 hours for all the updates to complete.

Cost for all the updates was £150. This didn't include the FSC code for the navigation map update, which we manged to find online for £70 (Again a lot cheaper than from BMW, who wanted close to £500 just to update the iDrive and install the latest maps).

This should really have been done as part of the preparation process for a BMW AUC, but at least we are up to date now

PM me if you want any contact details.

Agree that an AUC car should be upgraded with all the latest software when being prepared.

It just should!

But it should be done as part of the prep, and as part of the cost of the car.

The problem is that the sales, service and parts departments at a BMW dealer all run their own P&L, so they'll cross charge each other for any work.

Each franchise is different, so you may get someone who's more customer focused and will negotiate a deal. The two dealer franchises we've dealt with so far, Sytner and Cooper, have been appalling in terms of after sales customer care  They are night and day compared to the customer service you get from Mercedes Benz.

The only advice I can give is make sure a full system software and map update is included in any deal you do on a AUC, as they will just want lots of cash from you after you've purchased to do any work.

Does anyone know how often they update the maps?
Do they do it yearly, quarterly and on what dates, as it would be beneficial to wait until the latest update has been released before handing over the cash.

Hi guys,

Bring up an old thread, I think my map and idrive is from 2008.
Is it worth getting it updated? So far I don't have any issues with it.
Can someone recommend the best approach for getting it updated?
I'm located in Aberdeen if that helps.

The only legal way to do it is to take it to BMW.

As to whether it is worth it or not, if there have been no major road changes where you live or where you regularly drive to, then I would say its pretty pointless spending £200 on doing it.

That's not the case anymore, as the EU law states that manufactures cannot operate restrictive practices on servicing and repair.

Authorised independent agents can and do have the same access to the BMW ISIS system that the main dealer has for software updates.

You can purchase the navigation map and update code from the main dealer but have an independent agent update the system for you, so you don't have to pay the main dealer per hour costs.

If you have the original 2008 maps, then there's no post code entry for destinations, which was the main reason we upgraded.

Just a bump to this thread, the new 2013 maps are out.

Lets hope they fix the problems what we all had with the 2012 maps. I will report back later when i update mine see how it goes
