Think this is a valid method - my detailer often uses a bit of clay when washing the car, it will get some of it off, but perhaps not all. Remember....if you drop the clay, bin it! I think you should re-apply wax after claying as well. You can clay it like this as part of the wash stage (just targeting the tar spots, so not a full clay).
