I know why our cars are having so many problems...

Quite a few of us who bought our cars in the Jan-Mar quarter to get the extra discounts are now having issues with those cars.

I've suggested its due to bad build quality, bad QC etc etc, but really the reason has been staring us all in the face....

BMW had a load of crummy parts that they needed to shift, so offered huge discounts to sucker us into buying the cars, then slipped those duff parts onto the production line.

The good news is that our cars DO HAVE hill start assist. Its just that they had a HUGE batch of duff units to shift so none of them work.

I'm sure you're all eternally grateful to me for clearing this up, cos its been causing some comfusion on the forum.

Your welcome.

Happy :driving:

No I don't think it's just the 2.0 models that are suffering. On Monday my car was in because the drivers heated seat has failed and there is a patch of paint delamination on the front bumper, both fortunately covered by warranty.

I would suggest that it's the build quality rather than the materials, build for the e85 & e86 was North America and for the e89......Germany :o

My car is back in for a rattle and suspension failure light which cleared. Will they charge me for it?

It seems to me either the durability of BMWs is not good or there is non-existing quaility checks at the factory and dealers.

Having said that I'm going to buck the trend, apart from the engine whine which is hopefully going to be sorted next week the Zed has been perfect, paint quality and panel fit is spot on, no rattles or squeaks, had the odd water drip of the passenger side but nothing serious. Touch wood I'm hoping reliability stays as good as my Z3 which after 11 years hasn't missed a beat :)

Do I regret buying a Z4 over the new 1 series?, well after driving a 118d Sport courtesy car I was quite impressed and how much more refined it felt over the Z4 but it didn't feel special enough and was dull for want of a better word.

I will be interested in the 135i M though as prices are around what I paid for the Zed :?

I purchased a 35iS's from the first shipment into the UK of this model and you'd think I would have had problems, but other than a re-call on the rear bumper I had nothing go wrong with it whatsoever :?

No no, you miss my point.

I'm not saying the Z4 is inherantly faulty...I'm saying that they used the discounts to tempt buyers to buy so they could flush through the duff parts, then, when the summer oders come in and the price is high again, they will have good parts.

Tim - you were affected - the part that caused your engine whine was one of the duffers they needed to shift.

My car has a crap roof seal.

JDM was very unlucky in that on the day his car was built, they were really at the bottom of the barrel.

People who bought the cars outside of the jan-march period were either just unlucky, or victims of previous duff-part-shift schemes.

JDM has a Friday Afternoon car as they call it whereby the workers are too busy thinking of the weekend!

...whilst fitting parts taken from the duff bench....

The e85 was one of BMW's most reliable cars.

We toured the South Carolina plant and came away impressed. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a US assembled BMW, but the X3 and X5 are too large.

This review of the X6 is one of the very few times I agree with Clarkson

It's interesting that other than the cracked alloy/run flat issue the early E89's owned by people on here seemed to have a lot less issues than the recent batch.

Exactly...the duff parts that they needed to shift!!!

Touch wood I dont have many issues with my E89, its one of the last 23i 6pots. (Built June 2011)

I doubt BMW would install duff parts on purpose, as it will cost them £££ to fix under warranty etc. AFAIK the dealers bill BMW UK for the time their techs spend on the car.

They will no doubt outsoure alot of part manufacture to third partys if they had QC issues they would send them back to the manufacturer...

It could be they have changed manufacturer and not realised they have issues yet....

Having said that leaks should not happen the engineering to develop a folding roof should have included how to stop it leaking

My e89 delivered (last week) without any issues, did think the bonnet realignment was out though. Dealer told me to give it a good push from a hight to close - embarassingly it worked, one red face. So fingers crossed.

Sometimes BMW do get it badly wrong, I bough a new R1200RT (bike) about 4 years ago, and they had a batch of faultly ignition rings which left me and a lot of new customers stranded also had the drive shaft replaced on mine and many other bikes after 12 months. I have to say though all were sorted under warranty and worked flawlessly since.

It can happen with any manufacturer - once had a E series Merc gearbox replaced after 3mths on a new car.

The key is how they deal with it, lets hope they make it right for those affected.

My car been in the stealer all week. On Wednesday BMW authorised them to change a door seal. That was due Thursday.

Phoned this morning for an update...seal not arrived yet cos its coming from Germany, so I wont get my car back till next week now...

At least its not sunny, but I am missing it!

Why is the dealer keeping the Zed? surely its driveable?

My dealer quoted me 7 to 10 days to get the wastegate valve from Germany but turned up after a couple of days so it should'nt take too long for parts to arrive.

Cos they've had it so many times that they know I'm getting pissed off with the ping-pong game of the car going in and out. I told them this time I dont want it back till they've tried everything (i.e. change the seal, goto monsoon centre etc) cos that will mean when I get it back, they will have done absolutely everything they can think off, and if it leaks again, then I will be able to push for replacement.

It's been in for a total of 20 days now over its 5 visits for this issue, and still counting. Might try and get them to make a months payment for me, as soon they'll have had it for a month!

Hope its not being used as the salesmans run around :? :driving:

When I dropped it off I took a photo of the dash showing mileage (and full tank of fuel).

When its been in before I used the iphone app that works with the connected drive to show the location of the car (cos I had the same worry!) and it was where it should be!

The loan 1'er I have only has 10 miles fuel range left in it, so I'll need to put some more in. It hurts putting fuel in other peoples cars...even though I am using it up
