I dont know what to do

Bit of a dilemma here...had a go at insuring my car in october this year to see how much it would be for another year...and it came to £2800 which is less than i imagined...but still not cheap. Cos i knew it would be a lot i decided last month that come renewal time i would trade in my Z4 for something more sensible (boring). But i dont really want to downgrade to much so i was thinking about getting something like the old shape 320ci or a current m sport saloon with a small engine or something like that. But cos i dont wanna downgrade too much i want a biggish engine ( 2.2 or above) so insurance is pretty much the same. So the only car i can think of which is BMW related is a mini cooper s....which i can insure for £1700...much more like it!!

So the obvous choice is that?? Or it it... not sure how much id get back on my z4 in october...i bought it last october for 15k?? So if i part exchanged it for a cooper s would i be losing out? surely pice wise it would be a like for like swap? or would i lose about 1000 in value cos im part exchanging my car? obv the dealer needs to make money

So basically what do u guys reckon? Sell the car in oct and go mini cooper s (which is faster than my car...if a lil less classy) or just keep the zed

Hmmmm
cheers peeps

Woots, if you dump the Zed and go Mini you'll have tons of spare cash because you won't get as many dates so you'll save a wad. (Ooh bad pun, not intended).
Swapping cars will cost money. Probably as much as the difference in ins. costs so you're no further ahead .
My idea would be to skip a couple of weekends of wine women and song and then you will have the money to pay the insurance and keep the Zed.

hmmmhh
ive got a gf now tho so the dating thing is kinda over (boring) mehh
but ur probably right about the being no firther ahead.
i looked at insurance for an M3....and if id got one of those this october id be paying same insurance as i am now for the zed. why didnt i wait just one more year????? :headbang: :headbang:

I had an M3, the running costs will kill you, I was running a new set of back tires every summer, services are pricy, probably the same as a ZM (same engine )

on the plus side it does have a real engine and an M badge. :D and they are invisible in traffic, not like a Zed. (less police attention)

heres an idea, as you have a Gf now why not say that you want to stay home a bit more with her and (get all mushy on her) You'll save a bit of cash and make brownie points at the same time...

have you tried putting the girlfriend on the insurance, or any woman for that matter, it should lower it. or if your really struggling but dont want to give it up you could have a parent as the main driver and you as a named, down side is you dont earn ncb. its the reason i had a seat ibiza for a few years before a bmw, insurance is a killer. im hoping now im 29 i may see premiums sub £500 for the z4 as ill have 4 years ncb end of next month. £2800 is very steep, was that on a limited mileage policy or not?

to be honest with my boring hat on why not buy something funky yet cheaper - say a non cooper mini or a fiat 500 or alfa mito, and then get back into a zed when your financially better off. if you have to sell do it in the summer to maximise what you'd get back, obviously private sale will get you more than a trade in. its easily done these days with auto trader and piston heads, i sold my ibiza in 2 days - put lots of very good pics in the ad and was honest about the car and put any relevant spec in it, such as optional extras.

£2,800 to insure 2.0 Z4 Roadster!!! Get a 320/325Ci (E46) coupe and insurance may be cheaper.

You are 20 right? You definitely need to shop around for your insurance. That's an insane price for an engine that small. At 21 I was paying £630FC for a 2.8. Try insuresupermarket.com and then when it gives you a good price, get a quote again on their site direct to get it down even more. Also add mum and dad as named drivers, it knocks a few quid off. If that's still not working, I'm stumped. Have you got no no claims or lots of points? Do you live somewhere that's permanently on fire?

Have u tried chris knott. I got a damn good price from them last time. it due for renewal next month no idea how muhc it would be?

Also try elephant, but add on a 40+ female. I did this on my last car and the insurance dropped £380.

They also do a 10 month bonus accelerator scheme to help you gain No claims bonus's.

Would always recommend for new/young drivers. :)

Well on the premium ive got now ive said my car is garaged and that i do 8000 miles a year
the registered address is a fairly affluent area id say... not quite got wayne rooney as my neighbour but i dont live in a shed.
ive got my dad on the insurance and 1 yr ncb and its over 5k...so 2800 with 2yrs ncb was okay i thought?
i ll try that chris knott fella when it comes to it maybee...
cant sell the zed in the summer otherwise id lose like 10 months and wouldnt get my 2nd yr of no claims
hmmm think i ll just hafta bite the bullet and pay the 2800 wont i

Woots - have you tried fiddling around with the options on elephant when you run the quote through.
As per above - try adding more drivers and being a bit creative with your ocupation

overall, its going to be high becuase of all the factors against you

Im 29, do live in a london SW4 postcode AND even with full protected no claims im paying just under 1k on my 3.0si banana boat roadster

Insurance - its all so very subjectivly varaible!

I feel for you...£2800 is crazy. I'm wondering if the soft top is a factor now for theft etc, bumping it up....? Because:

...I'm 27, London, and my renewal is coming in just under £700...

think i'd just be better off holding onto the zed for another year then....
then once im 21 i'll look for something different

Is a coupe a lower insurance cost than a ragtop nowadays?
(I bought my first V6 Capri because the Triumph Spitfire I was going to get was double the insurance rate )

Might be worth seeing if there are any of those PAYG schemes still running that use the tracker, i.e. if you aren't driving in the middle of the night etc.., your premiums are lower...Norwich Union used to do it I think.

Or seriously, find yourself a good broker and talk it through with them. You might be surprised.

Admiral used to be OK with younger drivers.....

simple question....do you have to pay the whole shot at once or can you do it monthly...???
