Hunter wheel alignment

Hmmm. Thought you might have gotten it cheap - I had mine done at H&C Motors, they have a chap with a mobile hunter kit, cost me £150.

Sorry Jan, mine are buried somewhere. I'll look them out if you remind me. Where did you get it done ?

Post em up Bing  I need to get mine done, just letting the new springs settle for a couple of weeks first. I'm assuming there should be an optimum set up but there seems to be a lot of variables here. Finding a garage that know what they are doing must be top of the list.....

Any recommendations for wheel alignment in the Kingston Upon Thames area or north surrey/ south london?
Also what do you ask for? Are all these things necessary?
1. Full Geometry - £108.00
2. Steering Sensor Reset - £30.00
3. Individual Camber/Caster adjustment - £15.00

I will ask when I book this but like to be fore-armed if possible.

That sounds really expensive, it would total over £150 quid. Also I don't understand why you pay extra for caster and camber adjustment as that is what you do when you have a wheel alignment. I paid 50 quid for my wheel alignment but I did by two new rears at the same time. Anything over 100 quid sounds excessive and an alignment should include all adjustments to get it right.

just had mine done today, they said they couldn't adjust the front camber anymore due to the top struts being pushed up - probably due to pot holes. any comments appreciated.

thanks,
craig.

Hi

This is an interesting thread! I had mine done today for £60 :o . `i was shocked because most people pay £100+. Not intending to jack this but also feel that its on topic

So mine was done today as Ive now dropped the car and spaced it 15mm front and 20mm rear. I will post my before and after results later. The car was running well but since the spacers went on, i thought i better get it tracked as the car was shaking at 60 mph +.

1) They listed my 3L as an M, because they said it had M-sport suspension.

2) When I asked about weights they said it would make no difference at the height they tested the car??? this confused me because each time i see a thread on this subject everyone states that weight "must be used" ??

3) My front passenger side wheel goes inwards at the top and is seriously noticeable when on the ramp but not the ground and they advised me to see a mechanic asap, but there was no signs of anything wrong!

4) They advised the camber at rear could not be adjusted as it was at its limit.

5) I know I have a blown front shock, but that was within value but the L was not!?

So what are you asking or just advising of your experience?

You seem like you got a £60 job done, with a few corners cut. Perhaps that explains the price variance from shop to shop. The guys at Hunter shops generally look at everything, then show you to decide if it should be adjusted, they weight it and road test.
3.0 does have ///M sport unless specified on the order to be standard
Weights are obligatory - discussed many times so as to set the suspension and in the BMW TIS
If the wheel is visibly out something is very wrong
If the camber is at the limit then that's it unless you can find a rear kit (which I've not heard of, but could well be available)

£100 for alignment seems very reasonable to me.

Given that they said weight wasn't an issue, I'd have taken it elsewhere - they clearly have little knowledge of alignment and are just following numbers on a screen til they go green - not the way to do it. Just because the likes of Kwikfit now have Hunter machines, it doesn't mean they know how to setup a car correctly, or how to interpret the data properly.

With a knackered shock though, you shouldn't have bothered til it was sorted.

Has anyone had problems with their car being lowered?

The place I use have a Hunter system and charge £45 for front and rear and £15 for any camber adjustments, I've recently lowered mine (Eibach Pro Kit, nothing stupid) and added spacers and wanted to have it done again. Apparently if you can get a finger between the top of the tyre and the arch you should be alright?

The statement of being able to get a finger in between the tyre and arch probably relates to having enough travel to avoid rubbing the arches.

You absolutely need the alignment carried out again after lowering - you gain static camber, which will have altered the toe too - the whole setup will be a mess, causing grip to be askew, and will wear the tyres quicker.

I nipped down to the ATS the other day and they said they couldnt do the alignment as it was too low. I used H&R springs. Does anybody know if a more performance orientated garage will have the capability?

ATS don't use a hunter machine and yes mine was to low for them as well :)

Had to find somewhere who has a hunter machine

Kwik fit by me (Sutton Coldfield) have just installed one. Apparently they plan to roll them out across most branches

See my earlier comment ;)

Thought I’d post on this old thread instead of creating another -

Regarding alignment, would I have to deviate from the Hunter systems pre loaded BMW settings to allow for my wheel spacers and Eibach springs?

Thanks

5 yr revival is worth a commendation
No idea on the perfect response. With my local guys I tell them what I’ve done and they sort my car out, regardless of lowering, shocks, tyres, etc.

Haha thanks!

Been searching the forum for my answer and came across this thread hence the resurrection.

I’ll take your advice and just tell the tech what I’ve done to the car.
