Called to see a friend's new front drive - pleased I'd had my independent tighten up my handbrake :o :D

What's yours like?

Previous car (2.5si) was perfect. At 70k the shoes needed a re-grease, but that was cheap.

Current Z4MC has a couple of ratchet teeth missing, which means it needs to be Geoff Capes'd on even a slight incline. Ratchet replacement is a centre console out jobbie, so I'm going to leave it a little while.

That roadster looks the dogs, btw.

Thanks PT; had my eye on it for a long while before getting the chance to own it.

No problems on a slope like that. A natural requirement of parking most places in Cornwall.

Mine's fine, thanks for asking, but she would probably hit me if she overheard me call her that....

Handbrakes on BMWs seem to be a bit hit or miss from my (limited) experience.

My 320td was fine, 123d needed loads of notches before anything happened, first Z4 was great, next Z4 not quite as good and 325ti is a bit like the 123d..........!

So long as they pass the MOT I can live with that - just leave it in gear!

Just had mine replaced under warranty as had lost a few notches. Still needs a bit of play to get it to hold mind you.

Mine's fine too - although does need adjustment every year to take it back down to 3-clicks.

All good here, too, Paul
Fortunately my car spends most of its time on my drive which is flattish. I always leave it in gear and don't use the handbrake when it's parked on the drive - due to the way it sits (it is effectively "chocked") there is zero chance of it rolling forward or back and I find that if I leave the handbrake on for any length of time (eg 5 or 7 days) it sticks to the pads which I hate having to break free when I come to drive it. £ or 4 clicks and it's fully on, has always been like that.

It's a BMW they're all s**t

Yeah they work but you can't hand brake turn :(
Of course you can, just need to dip the clutch so that there's no drive to the rear wheels.

Power oversteer is better though.

Same here, My Z has a good handbrake with just a few clicks, my 320 has a poor one despite adjusting it it's always a surprise it passes the MoT

Auto box in park and handbrake off if it's going to be sitting on the drive all week....pads/shoes stick to the discs if it's been raining(who am I kidding....it's Scotland...bound to have been raining some time in a week!!)
Although I'm guessing you're not overly interested in electric handbrake

Just replaced my rear discs and pads and adjusted the handbrake as well. Mine is more than 3 clicks but has passed the last 3 MOTs. Will probably need adjustment in a month or so I reckon.
I found I couldn't adjust them anymore (shoes trailing with handbrake off) but holds the car on a slope (always in gear though).

Mine held really well on the ramp up to the turnpike carpark at the weekend :) that was pretty bloody steep

Had my rear discs and pads done at a bmw specialist about 2 weeks ago when I release the handbrake and go to drive away I get a grinding/squealing noise as I pull away so I took it back it just does it now when I put handbrake on full but it is getting better but I am going to take it back again
Any idea guys what it can be some intresting comments though
Still a great drive though

My handbrake worked really well when I had to use it in a red mist moment on my recent Scottish tour in July, uphill corner unsighted damp bit of run off from the hilly left hander , understeer :o then some handbrake/ power help, bit of a brown trouser moment :driving: :)

Sh1te actually, so bad that my mate alerted me that my car won pride of place on the Facebook page for the towns worst parkers.

I parked up at an out of town shopping centre and when I returned the car was in the middle of the roadway of the car park with a couple of bricks chocked up on the front wheels to prevent it rolling away any further! Thanks whoever you were! I had forgotten to leave it in gear like I normally do.
