I had a situation this week where an old friend of mine has really been quite nasty with me and told me I've been selfish and offensive because I objected to him running up a £250 per person drinks bill in a nightclub...

this is always an interesting one, similar to works' nights out when someone is clearly on a mission to quaff the priciest item on the menu at each course, has pointedly arranged for their other half to pick them up (this in itself ordinarily means everyone's put out, as they demand a later kick off to get home and drop their car off, then they turn up 20 mins late dressed totally inappropriately for the crowd) and is sinking drinks like gazza at last orders.

the same person usually takes umbrage when the lady who had a diet coke and a salad doesn't want to pay for king prawns, rib eye steak, some fancy arse cheesecake concoction, 2 glasses of wine, one glass of baileys and an irish coffee (v 20th century), I see it the other way, who's the mean one? someone who's happy to pay for their consumption, or someone who wants everyone else to share the cost of their greed...

OP, i'd have pointed out that minding one's own business is good manners and sticking your nose into others' business is lacking social grace. but you were more courteous in your treatment of her.
