Hi all-after asking advice on here and being advised to get the fleabay TIS,i have done this but as my laptop is 64 bit what should i be seeing?-
I see a list after list of words such as GRAFIC,DOCS,BOHLP?-
Any advice?-i think srhutch mentioned i may have to download something to be able to read it properly?

There is an admin tool to go with it, I am not on my machine with TIS on it so can't remember what it is called.

There are several installation programs that come with it.

If your computer is Windows Vista or Win7 you might not actually be able to install it (newer versions than my TIS - purchased late 2010 - might be ok though). I ended up having to install a virtual machine with XP on it...

It sounds like you're just viewing the contents of the disc. Like PVR says you will have to install the various programs.

Unfortunately I could never get it to work on W7, and I work in IT :)

I installed it on XP mode - which is a free download of a full XP machine depending on your W7 version.

You are better to create a small Windows xp virtual machine on your Windows 7 machine. It will run from there fine.
If you need more info, just let me know.

I found WinXP VM or "XP Mode" to be dog slow, so much as to be almost unusable.
It's possible to install & run from the HDD (without the CD) with a bit of registry tinkering.
Won't it run in "compatibility mode"?

D-oh! I just posted that, then realised I had it installed on a Windows 7 laptop! Trouble is, I can't remember how I did it.... let me go figure for a day or two, if I can work out a how to, I'll post it here.

Just install vmware player and get a small 512mb win xp machine going. Its fairly easy if you are familiar with a PC.

Andy, I'm using XP Mode on Win7 x64 without any issues.

If you PM me your email address I'll talk you through it.

Try this, I hope it works, this is with the 1995 TIS CD:

Installing BMW TIS to Windows XP/Windows 7 to run without CD:

1. Copy all CD files to a root folder on the hard drive, e.g. C:\BMW_CD

2. Install Sysadm:
Browse to: C:\BMW_CD\Win95\BMW\TIS\Setup.exe and double-click to install.

3. Install MS ODBC driver:
Browse to: C:\BMW_CD\Win95\ODBC_XP\ORACLECLI.MSI right-click and choose “Install” (don’t choose “Install.exe” it won’t work!)

4. Open Sysadm from the Desktop, click TIS tab and select “Install” and choose Install to hard disk drive, and English language. This will install and create a new folder called C:\BMW95 (or similar). At this point TIS will run OK from the CD if this is all you want.

5. Mods to Registry (WARNING: Backup your registry first!)
Unfortunately, TIS will STILL look for the database files on the CD drive (usually D:\) at this point which is a little irritating, so we have to edit the registry a little to change all references from “D:\BMW_CD\....” to read “C:\BMW_CD” (where D: is the letter of your CD drive) as follows:-

1. Go to “Start” “Run” and type “Regedit” to open the Registry Editor.
2. Click “Edit” “Search” and type “BMW” (without the quotes)
3. Press F3 carefully a few times until you navigate to the “Computer\HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\\BMW\Sysadm” key, Right-Click the Binary Value “CDDrive” and choose “Modify” and change the value to read “C:\BMW_CD” and OK.
4. Select and Right-Click the Binary Value “SetupOption”, choose “Modify” and change the path statement to read “C:\BMW_CD” and OK.
5. Press F3 to navigate to (or click) the TIS key folder in the left hand pane, and change the following path statements contained in this folder in the same way as previously: “CDDrive” value, and “SetupPath” value.
6. Exit Registry Editor, remove CD and restart.

7. Now when you open TIS, it should run from the HDD, so you can put the CD away safely in a drawer.

8. Further tweak, change the default TIS icon:
The default icon is an ugly blue box with “TIS” in the middle, so I thought it would be nicer to have a proper BMW logo instead;
Right-Click to Create a new Desktop Icon and Browse to “C:\BMW95\TIS\BIN\TIS.EXE” and type a name for the shortcut e.g. “Z4 Workshop Manual” & “Finish” Right-Click the blue shortcut icon you just created and choose “Properties” and “Change Icon” and “Browse” to C:\BMW95\SYSADM\BIN & “Open” click “OK”, “Apply” & “OK” again. You now have a BMW badge as the icon.

:)

You don't need to copy all the files to the HDD before installing, when you install you are given the option to run from HDD.

And that will run under Win7? It would be excellent to be able to ditch the Virtual Machine setup I'm running now!

Yes, I have it running on 2 different laptops under Windows 7, one from the CD and the other from the HDD.
My 1995 version didn't give me the choice of HDD install from the menu, I remember now that's why I copied the CD files to the HDD, hoping the program would remember the install path as C:\ not D:\ unfortunately, that wasn't the case, hence the registry mods. Believe me, I wouldn't have gone to all that trouble if I could have just ticked a box! I'm not saying some later versions aren't different, however.

Best just have a go installing, first backup the registry, make sure System Restore is on and you have a recent restore point, and have a play!
:D
