Try this, I hope it works, this is with the 1995 TIS CD:
Installing BMW TIS to Windows XP/Windows 7 to run without CD:
1. Copy all CD files to a root folder on the hard drive, e.g. C:\BMW_CD
2. Install Sysadm:
Browse to: C:\BMW_CD\Win95\BMW\TIS\Setup.exe and double-click to install.
3. Install MS ODBC driver:
Browse to: C:\BMW_CD\Win95\ODBC_XP\ORACLECLI.MSI right-click and choose “Install” (don’t choose “Install.exe” it won’t work!)
4. Open Sysadm from the Desktop, click TIS tab and select “Install” and choose Install to hard disk drive, and English language. This will install and create a new folder called C:\BMW95 (or similar). At this point TIS will run OK from the CD if this is all you want.
5. Mods to Registry (WARNING: Backup your registry first!)
Unfortunately, TIS will STILL look for the database files on the CD drive (usually D:\) at this point which is a little irritating, so we have to edit the registry a little to change all references from “D:\BMW_CD\....” to read “C:\BMW_CD” (where D: is the letter of your CD drive) as follows:-
1. Go to “Start” “Run” and type “Regedit” to open the Registry Editor.
2. Click “Edit” “Search” and type “BMW” (without the quotes)
3. Press F3 carefully a few times until you navigate to the “Computer\HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\\BMW\Sysadm” key, Right-Click the Binary Value “CDDrive” and choose “Modify” and change the value to read “C:\BMW_CD” and OK.
4. Select and Right-Click the Binary Value “SetupOption”, choose “Modify” and change the path statement to read “C:\BMW_CD” and OK.
5. Press F3 to navigate to (or click) the TIS key folder in the left hand pane, and change the following path statements contained in this folder in the same way as previously: “CDDrive” value, and “SetupPath” value.
6. Exit Registry Editor, remove CD and restart.
7. Now when you open TIS, it should run from the HDD, so you can put the CD away safely in a drawer.
8. Further tweak, change the default TIS icon:
The default icon is an ugly blue box with “TIS” in the middle, so I thought it would be nicer to have a proper BMW logo instead;
Right-Click to Create a new Desktop Icon and Browse to “C:\BMW95\TIS\BIN\TIS.EXE” and type a name for the shortcut e.g. “Z4 Workshop Manual” & “Finish” Right-Click the blue shortcut icon you just created and choose “Properties” and “Change Icon” and “Browse” to C:\BMW95\SYSADM\BIN & “Open” click “OK”, “Apply” & “OK” again. You now have a BMW badge as the icon.
