How-To - e89 Cruise Control Retro-fit

Dear Dave,

Thank you for your PM, as newbie I cannot send you one,

Your infos about integrated amp is interesting, when you say you upgraded to 676, have you achieve to have low output on the iDrive Unit ? As I understand, amplifying high level output will also amplify the defects of integrated amps right ?
I bought the vibe audio amp but never installed because of that - I think it is not worth the time I will spent on it to install it since it amplify high output.

At last, good to know the iDrive unit amp is good enought to your ear too, meaning I'm not crazy finding my sound good enough with my Focal kit. I did not change woofer then, do you think changing woofer to 4-ohm ones using the iDrive unit amp can upgrade the sound more ?

You can answer me in mp, sorry again to mess up the subject, can't write mp for now ^^

Also, What could be the impact of using your older SPDaten v67 instead of v71 ?

Figured out I unlock MP now ! :D

Well I used to used 67, until I was aware of 71 and it made no difference.

Nice to hear.

Using the software from the link posted above - but setting com1 as you write instead of modifying C:\EDIABAS\Bin[ibd.ini as described here (in french)
https://www.bmw-serie3.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?t=23512 make INPA working correcly.

So now I will start unmounting all the stuff !

Just chipping in here with regards to the sound system- both the 676 speakers and amp is average, not bad, not great. Improving either the speakers or the amp helps (not sure what is best as an initial choice though). There’s plenty of info from various forum users who are / have tried different set ups here https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=146911.

There are threads on replacing the 676 speakers with the Harmon ones which is an improvement (from anibuszed- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQVyPZQuB9U) and also replacing the speakers with non BMW specific speakers from Crunch, and I think the vibe amp - https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=125344

Some are happy with factory subs with a replacement amp, some happy with just upgraded speakers - it’s hard to say what’s best but the standard stuff is easy to improve apon. Initially I replaced the factory speakers with Crunch (using adapters), kept the standard 676 amp and was cool. I then upgraded the amp to the Match 8 BMW and was a decent upgrade, much louder and clarity. Then went with Match speakers all round, and finally settled on Focals with the Match 8 amp - this has been a huge improvement, and very happy - but it’s not cheap, nor is the amp plug and play and needs a basic rewire, but the thread mentions the fix.

Just be prepared, it’s a rabbit hole - ultimately, the 676 speakers need more power, and the 676 amp isn’t quite powerful enough - but replacing either with better quality improves the deficiencies in the other, and replacing both is top notch.

Sorry for going off topic!

Thank you very much for your answer, which enlightened me about the subject :D

I have discussed this topic in PM with Annubis(Dave), told me that iDrive unit amp is not that bad as some non-iDrive unit as he experienced.

For now I use focal Midrange (front and back) and tweeter in standard stereo conf, sound is great, as focal is neodyme I think is easier to drive than others for the original iDrive amp I use. I tried eton ones, advised in some z4 forum - but there were to big for my door O_o !

I wish to change my sub with focal ones, either the 4 ohm one (like the BMW - 86 dB sensibilty) or 8 ohm (but 89 dB sensibility) to reduce power strain in case I don't change the amp - I have stated about yet - as trying Vibe sound or either brand amplifier make me want to.

I have to test further my actual conf to see if there is amplification problem and state about the sound quality.

The problem is that the idea of amplifying already high level output from the iDrive amplifier is not so satisfying for me as the signal still going through the iDrive amplifier, thus inherit amplification problems from it, at least partially.

-----
About cruise control, I got it working thanks to the file from Dave and the BMW easy coding tool package I posted above - I mixed up the thing and got it working. Thanks to him for the huge work accomplished with the tutorials !

Not sure unpluging the battery is necessary for the airbags since modern airbags have often a battery inside :)

Also added the BC button menu to reduce the auto headlight sensibility - works nice now.
For anyone interested - you have to change this variable to unlock the menu - you can also change the settings directly in the RLS module.

A little look up of prices for parts.
So I've come across these two sets of Cruise stalks for sale on eBay, both are used and both are for a car with manual wipers. They'll both fit an E89 Z4 from 2009 to 2016 inclusive and are basically identical, all be one is cleaner than the other.

This is listed as BMW 1 series from 2010, but it'll fit any E89.
Price £19.99

This one is listed for multiple models and is from a 2007, but again it would still fit any E89.
Price £299.00 (NO I did not mistype that, it is £299.00!!)

Apart from the stated models in the adverts, as I say they'll all still fit any E89 and work perfectly, can anyone spot why there is a differing price between them? :driving:

And here is another for sale add. Very misleading and inaccurate description.
Stated as "Cruise Control Retro Fit Stalk" oh no it isn't! This stalk alone will not convert a standard stalk assembly into a cruise control assembly simply by attaching this single stalk. It will physically fit but is won't do anything! :headbang:
It would be useful, though, if you had a faulty cruise stalk and changed it over, but how you'd determine in the first place what was actually at fault is a different matter.

Hi Dave.
Just want to add my great big thank you to the long list. You are a star and these instructions are super comprehensive. You are now responsible for yet another Z4 with the addition of cruise control.
My experience:
I followed the advice and got from eBay a super cheap set of stalks making sure they had the autowiper function.
My car is also fitted with heated steering wheel and it took a while to hunt down a lower column cover that was suitable. Eventually got one from the US for about £35 delivered.
Again, eBay came up trumps with a cheap cable (£10) and I set about rebuilding an old Windows 7 laptop.
All went well with no issues except for a few drivers missing but that was easily fixed.
Only biggish issue I had is the version of software that I downloaded from Bimmerscene was different the instructions. I had to use this video to get it to work for me as I did not have the same buttons. https://youtu.be/Aacf0CtAVz8?si=4o0jkVgpFrmKbjGb

Thanks again.....

Glad you've got it all sorted
Anyone having software issues, give me a shout as i can point you in the correct direction (all above board and pukka!!)

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum and a new user of E89.

The only thing I find it missing is the CC, which is a problem in Wales now a days with 20 mile speed limits everywhere. :headbang:

Is kind Mr. AnubisZed still offering fitting and coding?

Thank you.

THank you for the PM, it doesn't look like I can reply yet.

I would be interested, for the last weekend of March. Anyway we can contact to iron out the details?

I don't have cruise control on my E89. I'm sure some of the cars I've had in the past, that CC would only operate above 30 mph. If specifically wanted for the 20 mph limits in lots of Wales, might be worthwhile confirming it will operate at that speed.
