BMW dealer was searching for approximately 2-3 months, then 3 months spent selling my cars and negotiating with the dealer. This was back in 2012 though so I think the year of purchase will be a big factor in many peoples answers.

I was drunk :D it was 12.30 am and I emailed a seller 400 miles away from me in Edinburgh with a cheeky offer. Next morning I checked my mail at 7.30am and he had replied accepting my offer as he had his new car delivered. I checked flights from London and there was a flight at 12pm. Had a shower, breakfast got in a cab and off I went :D
Got picked up at Edinburgh by a lovely guy who was a pilot! Took me to the car and that was that! I knew I had a great deal and drove her home 400 miles back to Essex. Got home around 9pm after 7 hours driving with a big smile :D That was a proper impulse buy!

Interesting results with about a third being bought from main dealers, a third from specialist or car sales dealers and a fair amount going through the forum and specialist websites. I'm guessing anyone buying later models and investing a fair amount of cash will want the added security of buying from a dealer and is prepared to pay the premium.

Brilliant!

Looked at loads of local ones all claiming to be 'mint' or 'excellent' condition but all were utter cack in the flesh (green moss around hood base/rusty wings/alloys kerbed to feck etc.). I was getting really frustrated with lying sh1tehawk sellers who were clearly treating their Zeds like Nissan Micras when I saw mine on Autotrader under 200 miles away. Gave the guy a call chatted for about 15 mins car sounded perfect but then he dropped 2 bombshells. Firstly he was in Belfast (Autotrader did not tell me there was a sea in the way!) and secondly he had taken a deposit on the car that morning!

He reckoned he wasn't wasting my time as the kid who left him a cheque as a deposit seemed a bit of a dreamer who would not come through with the readies and sure enough he called me back the next day and said the car was mine if I wanted it. One £30 EasyJet flight later and the deal was done! :driving: 4 years on still not bored with it!

You need to add a privet sale/auto trader/classifieds option.

My first was bought at an Independent,specialist/performance garage down south of England, current one bought in Birmingham, private sale, auto trader advert

Spent two or three weeks looking. Originally looking for a 2L Auto, and test drove a car from a local garage that I had no intention of buying, as it was too expensive. Fell in love with it however.
Looked at a Blue with Cream Leather example. However dealers idea of excellent condition was at odds with mine. Looked like someone had been playing football on the seats. :x
Realised I was not going to get a White with Red Leather auto, so looked for manual instead. Found pristine 2.3i about an hours drive away.

The rest is history. :driving: Very glad I went the manual route too.

PS: I did call the original garage to thank them and let them know I wouldn't be proceeding.

Through the forum - from JaRed - exactly one year ago today.

I think we still hold the record for the fastest sale on here?

I saw Ruth's post as soon as she'd posted it around 10:40. We made our way to Guiseley after lunch, arrived at 2, had the scariest test drive ever with Tony & bought Red around 4-ish that same day. TBH I think I was completely sold as we pulled up and saw it on the drive ;)

My Z4 was listed on Auto Trader by a used car dealer who had about 14 assorted BMW models on the lot, as he specialized in selling cars traded in to a local BMW dealer. Two of these were Z4's, one older with lots of miles, and one, a bright red 2007 3.0i with only 18,153 KMs (11,280 miles) Since I had a vehicle to trade, it was imperative that I find a car at a dealership who would accept my 2003 Porsche Boxster S as part payment. This resulted in a sales tax saving of about $1500.00 (approx. 750 pounds). I decided on a rock-bottom amount which I would accept as value for my Porsche, then set out for Hamilton, Ontario to check out the Z4. It was every bit as nice as I expected, and had been well cared for, and the test drive was quite satisfying even though it was naturally not as quick as the Porsche.
The dealership offered an acceptable figure for my trade, and I drove the Z4 home with a large smile on my face. In the last six years since retirement, I have owned a 1999 BMW 325ic, a 1998 Jaguar XK8 convertible, 2003 Boxster S, and now the 2007 Z4. Also had a 1993 Mazda Miata which has been replaced by a 2003 Miata. The Miata now has 18,000 KMs and the Z4 has 20,000 KMs and both are like new, so I think I am finished with car purchases at age 75.5

Main Dealer - sight unseen and negotiations via phone and Internet!

Same here!

The rights spec car came up, an E85 3.0si in Carbon black with black interior. Sadly it was sold to someone else. However, an hour later I had a call to say that the company would not let him have a convertible as a works car. Despite it being 250 miles away, I bought it there and then. Paid full asking price, I mean, what price love?!

A train down and the most excellent drive home.

After having a couple of bad servicing errors with my E91 at my local BMW dealer, I steered clear and searched the classifiedss by car spec, found a good one about 70 miles from home, clean car, good money and all good so far

i bought my coupe from the dealers before i knew about the forum, the M roadster i through the forum
