How old are you and am I too young to drive G29?

After joining the forum a month or so and seeing peoples' chats, it feels like I'm likely the youngest to be here with some quite big margin.

I started my ownership of G29 at the age of 32 as I think this is the dream car (not ultimate but one of my dream car) I can reach while the internal combustion engine is still being made. And that's why I go for it. But after getting it, many friends' comment is about whether I've started my mid-life crisis early?

I never regret a single second of getting the G29 but just wondering how old is other people here and whether I am too young to own the G29?

As discussed on several threads the “mid life crisis” comments regularly come from people who are either not allowed by their Mrs to buy one or who are jealous because they can’t afford one.

BTW, my whole life is a crisis, nothing to do with age

You like it, that’s the main thing, drive it and enjoy it :driving:

There’s owners on here from 20 ish, not G29 owners but Z4 owners.. My young fella is 17 next week and we looked at buying him an E85 2.2 but the insurance once he’s passes his test is prohibitive.

I got my Z4M at 23 (10 years ago  )

The Z4 is def a not a bad choice for a young guy like yourself :driving:

Midlife crisis is usually expressed toward people because of jealousy. 32 is way off mid life crisis got a few more years yet

Thanks Andy. Certainly agree that as long as I’m happy, I don’t really care about others’ comments.

About the z4 for your kid, just add your name as the name driver can significantly reduce the price. As long as you are not policyholder, it’s legal.

Hahaha, certainly true. Those who gave such comment have to drive mpv or 7 seater to meet family requirements. :tumbleweed:

Don’t you know it’s rude to ask a girl how old she is, never understood why mind, I’m 54 yrs young and no, drive the car that you want not what your friends think you should.

My first car was an 1974 MG Midget in red, in my late teens I was in a large group of friends and those that had their own cars most had sports cars, TR7, two X1/9’s, an MR2 even an MGB. If it were a choice between an Escort or an X1/9 most would have chosen the latter.

I like the fact that I drive something different, it’s not an SUV, and when the tops down on a late summer evening, people will look and be with envy.

I’m so sorry for not remembering there are girl members here when posting. Please accept my sincerely apologies. :P

mostly jealousy.

personally, ive encouraged my friends to have 2 seater sportscars in their twenties, when its just them and their partners. once kids come along, 2 seater sportscars go out the window for 20 years.

or, do what we've done, don't have any kids, and then you never have to get rid of your two seater sportscars. you can also go on holiday any time you like, and go out with (other child-less) friends any time you like.

I'm 37 - have your midlife crisis while you're still young enough to enjoy it!

I had my first roadster (MR2) just after I turned 30 and will have one as long as I can. I'm lucky enough that I should be able to keep one as a 3rd car when we have kids.

Cheers, I do that with my daughter already and have done with so for quotes for my son, hope you’re sitting down

Better news is that it wouldn’t have needed a black box in a Z4 like we are having to with his Astra hence I’ll not be driving it often

Also depends where you live and in the Z4Ms case the type of car.

I lived in cumbria back then which is band A. Originally I wanted an E46 M3 but the insurance was £3300 a Z4M coupe was for sale at Lloyds Carlisle wheh I was trying out the M3 and checked the insurance and it was £800 at 23 with M+D and I think 3 year NC. That was the reason I bought the coupe and obviously came to my senses when I realised how good looking they are. I was on my mum and dads policy originally as the a 1.2 16V Clio was £1600 at 17... so didn't get my own policy until I was 19.

Funny isnt it, at the time the Z4M was a really low risk car because they weren't sold by the buckets, the M3 on the other hand had dropped to about £10k and every kid on the block was picking them up and writing them off.

I live in Manchester now the car stealing hotspot in the UK and I pay £580 for the Z4MR 10 years on... But I did have my mini clubman JCW stolen earlier in the year so would usually be a bit cheaper. Selecting protect your no claims drops you to 3 years so I lost 10+ years which is so annoying.

Awww man. Don’t let jealous people ruin your fun.
You can afford it and you want it. Enjoy!

Too young? Seriously? I had a 525i at 18 and a Porsche Boxster S (new) at 24.
I’m 45 now and still love 2 seater sports cars with a drop top.

Real friends will be happy for you.

If you want an honest answer... yes you're too young, you should think about getting yourself something like a pimped up Corsa and donate the G29 to an older forum member because they don't have as many years left to enjoy it... :P

Too young? What the hell mate?

This is me in my early 20-ties with the Ae86:

I will have 39 in a month, and still, I only drive two-seaters. And if the family come, I will have at least one car that is two seater. As, I am in the club of people (like most of us here) that looks at the car and driving as something nice, relaxing and exciting. Not as a method of transportation from point A to point B.

So, you are too old in my book. :) There is a perfect time for a two-seater, in my book that is every year after you pass the driving exam. :)

It's sad that some don't have as many years left to enjoy. What's more sad is there are plenty years left but will have nothing to enjoy. :headbang: :headbang:

That doesn't look too bad. I once searched the insurance quote for a Aston Martin V8 Vantage when I was 20 and lived in Preston city center. Only one insurer could insure me to the car and cost about £30k+ per year. :tumbleweed: :tumbleweed:

Reading G29 threads makes me think that If you bought a G29 to cruise on the Motorway with Adaptive Cruise Control and wish that it had Driving Assist Professional which would keep you in the middle of the lane, accelerate for you, steer around corners for you and brake for you, then you have the right car. If, on the other hand you wanted a two-seater sports car that you would have to control and drive and look behind you when reversing, then you should have bought a E86 Z4. Age has little to do with it, it is a ‘state of mind.’ :poke:

Two separate issues here..

There is no lower age limitation on having whatever toys you want, if you can afford them then go for it!

I was 25 with then a subsequent string of TR7s and various rocketship motorbikes..really don't understand why it then took another 35 years plus to get another drop head car?

On this forum it seems to be stratified by amount of spare time on people's hands and disposable income.

A lot of the E85/E86 people are younger / less money that they can or are willing to allocate then its E89 and then G29 follow.

Like any generalisation there are exceptions..

My advice is enjoy it and drive it like there is no tomorrow..cause there may not be a tomorrow!

the younger folk like an E85/E86 because they're a better sportscar than the E89, which is more of a GT... :P

i bought my E85 for track use, wouldnt consider an E89 for track work. and a G29 is still fairly soft from what i understand, wouldnt really consider that either even if it was a lot cheaper.

If we are discussing Z4 generations, the first and the last for me is E85, after that, my ass is transitioning to something mid-engine, boxer configuration if you know what I mean.. :D

And I am 39, and E85 is perfect, don't like these new Zeds, even G29 is in my opinion for hipsters, too much assistance and everything. All I need is an ABS and that's it. :D
