It really detracts from the pleasure of owning a nice car! I was the same when I had my 3 series too. Not at all!

I have had some cars that could be worth worrying about (a Lotus Excel, in particular) but I did not actually worry about any of them, but BMWs are not really worriable-about-type cars.

One thing you get with any convertible is that you hear much more of the noises the car makes. All cars makes lots of noises you never hear in a tin-top, but which are entirely normal, but you do hear them with the hood down. (Imagine the driver of a Citroen XS hypothetical convertible hearing all of the fart-click-zippp that everyone else hears!)

From what I have heard, there are no systemic problems with any Z4 (unlike some other BMW models) and they have very solid resale values after three or four years old, so they seem to be a good bet for a modern sportscar that will not cause too much financial grief.

I know what an engine sounds like. And I also know what a faulty fuel pump sounds like when I had one.

Probably my car is more than a worry than yours because at one stage it had an engine from an M3 CSL, ESS supercharger to 400bhp and the subframe & LSD from a an M3. Not to mention the intrax coilover suspension and various other induction, manifold and exhaust mods. Unsurprisingly my warranty is void in a number of places. So unlike the majority I can't expect BMW to sort out whatever odd noise it starts making - it has to go to Simpson Motorsport or a few other select experts.

It was a light hearted question, I don't lose sleep over it. Although I do frequently drive to the far end of a car park so people won’t park next to me!
 
I once got rid of my beloved XR2 in 1994 because I constantly worried about it being nicked.

Bought an Orion Ghia injection, and 2 months later, that was stolen. I thought it would never be of interest.

Goddam it.

Yeah, a few days into owning my Alpina I scuffed the front spoiler in the car park at work. Couldn't believe it was lower than the Elise I had, doh! :headbang:
 
I worry some, but chalk the worry up to, if it happens it happens. I'll be ticked, but I'm not going to loose sleep over it.
 
im more concerned about my leather seats. they take a beating with jeans and crazy shenanigans.
 
I am not the only one then. :D I don't drive my car to supermarket, because I'm worried about careless drivers and trolleys (use my partner's Polo). I check everything (if possible), e.g. air-vents direction, switches, every body panel, wheels, tyres, etc. after the car is serviced. I just love my car too much. :)
 
I'm a just over a week away from collecting/paying for my (Dream car) Z4 ,

But at the moment I've got completely paranoid about it getting stolen or vandalised.

It doesn't help that I've been reading the stories on the Pistonheads forum about people being
woken up by blokes with baseball bats demanding the owners keys. :o
(And also reading the local police ANPR twitter feed)

At the moment the worry is outweighing the excitement.

Its going to be parked on street, and will stick out like a sore thumb
as there's nothing else on my street that matches it. 8) :?

Though having looked at neighbouring streets there are a few
different convertibles around of various types/ages - MR2, MX5, 6Series.
Along with a few expensive Mercs, BMWs & non-subtle looking cars.

So that helps a bit,
but I still have an underlying fear/paranoia at the mo'.

The thing is the more gentle you are the more likely things are to go wrong! Give it some stick (not abuse) but just drive it do as many miles in it as possible! Its usually pretty easy to fix niggly things that go wrong. I do worry but then drop it a gear and listen to that quad exhaust and it puts a huge smile back on my face.
 
Ive owned italian before. Therefore i dont lose a wink of sleep over the Z mechanically.

I think its the boldness of design that makes it stick out for vandalism which is one of its biggest problems. As someone previously said a road could have subtle looking 40k mercs parked all the way down it but your 7k Z will stick out a mile on a hoodie'd tikes radar.
 
I,m just as bad.Mind you I'm like this with our daily driver ( 04 reg fiesta - that still looks like new ) and 80's VW campervan.Used to worry constantly about my old Elan and how much it would cost if something major went wrong - having said that it never devalued - sold it for the same money I'd bought it for 3 years previously. My zed is faster, more refined and much better built but if partexchanged now would already have lost £3k+ in 3 months. Wish there was a cure for OCD !!

Drivers window for me - goes slow, sounds laboured, changes it's mind sometimes... But it's the expensive repair that I think we're worried about :cry:

As for the vandalism worry... The street behind where I live hasn't the best reputation, a number of the cars in the street have had up to four tyres 'spiked' by screws / nails placed under the wheels in the likely direction of travel (not mine though, strangely), and a cut-through to the aforementioned street runs down the side of my house. To top it all my car is parked on the kerb... Nothing's happened to it yet, but I'm about to fit carbon badges and I am dreading having them prised off now :cry: :cry:

However, if it happens then I reckon I'll get a cam on the outside of the house, identify the culprits if they do it again, then I'll follow them home and express my frustration in an appropriate manner :evil:

So true....

I dont worry too much about the zed. Something mechanical might go wrong, but I've seen 330ci BMWs with over 230k on the clock still going strong. Luckily my roof motor was done before I bought the car, think the rear springs have been done too.

It's good living in the sticks too, where your car doesnt get much attention. However, when stayed in Dundee a lot I was a bit concerned about some ned taking screwdriver down the side.... :(
