How many owners have a Private Plate on their Z4?

Getting ahead of myself perhaps, but what did you do to fit the shortened plate? It looks like you've cut the black backing plate down? Is that what you did?

I'm asking because I've got a plate on retention that I'll put on a Z4 when I get one  and it's smaller (but legal) than regular UK plates.

Cheers

Yes I did cut it down for neatness. I didn't want all that while plate spoiling the lines.

I simply worked out the legal minimum for 5 digits that came out at 14" and chopped around 4" out of the middle. I used the spare as reinforcement and plastic welded it to the rear. Reprofiled it slightly as I only had a prefacelift to hand and did it at a time I changed the front end so there were no holes from the old mounting showing.

Due to slight incident I'll be making a new one tonight if I pick up a new frame

I also have a private plate on mine. Had the plate for a few years now. I had it as a wedding present so the plate lasted longer than the marriage!! :P

I'm still in need of a private plate to get rid of the current standard one that says PUF.

I wouldn't normaly bother but I think I have a good reason now, I just need to justify the £400-500 for a plate I like, which is hard when thats half the price of a hardtop which I also really want. (never mind the M or aero bumpers and side skirts that I'm now day dreaming about)
I think I'll finally go for it in the new year though.

CJ- what size is your actual plate? Just wondering how short I'd be able to order one to say X11 XXX, I imagine the 11 would take about the same space as a single regular letter.
Is your rear plate small too? Does that size cover the original holes?

Pete,
My plate is 14" wide as noted above. On the dvla site is the exact specifications for a plate http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/number_plates_registration_marks.aspx see the spec PDF. It's all about letter size, font and amount of border space.
You can get a rough idea by measuring your own plates letter sizes, spacing and edges. Buy standard cheap plates and cut them down.

As I mentioned above I changed my carrier when I did the facelift as the OEM carrier has messy holes that would be visible.

Rears are the same but thankfully the holes were on less than 14" centres and I used standard double size tape to mount them.

Well I won't be changing the front bumper any time soon (I hope) and don't want to left with holes so I may have to stick with the standard size.

I think the holes on mine were on about 16 centres. I'd pull the plate off and measure the hole spacing. You'll have plenty of room and the registration you refer to would be wider anyway.

.....Meant to say nope but my reg is the closest thing I've come to owning a private plate - it starts LL (my wife is known by our neices and nephews as Lou Lou cause they can't pronounce her name for some reason!) and it ends JA - my name is Jaime....... we both drive the car so it was fate I got this car, it must be!

^^ Lucky git! ^^
My last 3 reg's ended 'OUB' 'XPM' 'PHY' and i couldn't get a name or amusing acronym out of any of them!

I have a private plate.. I couldn't afford 'CHR15'
.. so I changed my name to 'FD03 PYN'!

What about you guys/girls outside the UK? In the US you can get some real good plates, UK is limited to letters and numbers in a certain format.

US system of vanity plates allows pretty much any mix as long as it is not profound or used in the state.

I do remember seeing 6UL DV8 being allowed on a car in the 80's though!

I used to keep that info in my glovebox after I once got stopped - they didn't believe my plate was legally spaced until they checked the regs...
