How loyal are you?

Nice Audi.

This is a thread I was contemplating starting.

The answer is not at all. I actually dislike the BMW badge for all the numpties on the road that make it feel shameful to drive one rather than the privilege it should.

That said this is my 3rd BMW of 6 total.

The first was inherited and quickly disposed of (E36)
The second was loved but falling apart (E24)
The third was chased for years (E86)

I always recommend German, Jap and Korean to anyone I see, I wouldnt buy outside of these marques and never have myself. However I feel when you buy a car you shouldnt be buying the badge but the car itself..

I've had 2 3ers as company rides. A 320d M sport, then a 330i M sport. Opted out of car scheme for the allowance and bought a Mini Cooper S (half a BM?) then went VW, then Ford S-Max (which I still own as the daily barge) and bought the Alpina about 8 months ago. The nice thing is the Mini was cheap, allowing me to save my allowance to pay cash for the VW, and I've been a cash buyer ever since, I just save the monthly allowance. So my company actually bought my Alpina for me :)

Next on the "Mad cars I want to own, is a V8 M3 Coupe". But I'm keeping the Alpina unless something serious happens. I think with only 168 made, long term it might be an investment. If it's not, I don't care. I love it.

No Loyalty to BMW whatsover ....

As you can see from the waftmobile....

Thought about an X5 but after a defender and a disco the loyalty to LR was much greater than any to Munich...

Before the Z4 i was more a VAG man when it came to normal cars Audi A4s, Golf GTis..

BMW bought despite the badge

I did own four Saab 900 turbo one after the other. I still look at them and consider owning a classic. That was a good car. Pity the gearboxes imploded if you turned the turbo up.

I have anti loyalty for Mercedes. I was sold a brand new rust bucket and I would never buy one of their cars again. I want the bean-counting shareholders to suffer losses evermore.

1st BMW, I love the Zed but have Zero brand loyalty, even though I've owned them I dislike the smugness of the Merc, VW/Audi and BMW brands and bought the Zed purely as a modern and reliable alternative to my usual classic roadsters.

I always end up loving cars that actually give a lot more than expected, or than they are entitled to at the price and I can't think of a new BMW that fits that description.

x2 - though I loved my Focus ST for a few years, and it was totally reliable. I hated the badge every single day though - not a badge snob, but I spent those three years wanting a Z...

I have no loyalty to the badge as it is my first (owned) BMW. Had another company Z for a year. When I was in the company car scheme I had 2 Lexus IS200s and 2 Honda Accords, all 4 very well specc'd - which is what I love about Japanese cars. They seem to have decided that a lot should be standard for a given model - the Germans are reliable, but everything is an option, which irritates the hell out of me.

I still own one of the Honda's - bought it for £2k under the market price from the company, and it has now done 106k miles. At just under 100k it needed a new water pump and starter motor plus new discs all round (NOT a cheap service just before Christmas  ), it's had a couple of batteries, and an anti-roll control arm (I think that's what it was called :? ). Everything else has been standard maintenance, and it has never broken down... Touching wood hastily :D

If I had to change brands I would go Japanese every time, but for now I love my Z and I will probably get another when I can afford it - because I love the cars, not necessarily the badge

I don't understand this kind of remark at all. Pure nonsense. It was usually a myth propagated by the jealous/anti-success brigade that the UK seems very efficient in producing. Believe me I see identical proportions of idiots driving all the major marques be they 'prestige' ones or mainstream.

As for the point of the thread - no real loyalty as such but I've owned a Zed for 7 years now and always had an affinity for BMW stemming from when my father was a non-exec director at Bridgegate (now owned by Stratstone) when I was growing up. We had all manner of BMW's during that period.

What I like about BMW and Mercedes (or Jag/Land Rover for that matter) is that if you buy one you aren't getting a tarted up Skoda/VW/Seat like you are with an Audi.

I hope my next car will be a 997 GT3 because it's the closest thing to my Z4MC out there. I will be keeping my eye on Porsche to make sure they don't start using the VAG parts bin too readily since being taken over.

Certain amount of loyalty having had 2 7 series, 1 3 series and 2 Zeds and this being my second X5.

But I have always had a VW as well, never been without and currently have two (oh, also an Abarth).

I agree with you there are idiots driving all marques of vehicle and the mass market effect of BMW doesnt help this stereotype but its still to be seen that most boy racers in London especially are racing around in their 3's thinking they are the dogs..

It is changing, especially with the shift to audi etc and we as ambassadors in the zed community are undoubtedly doing a lot of good but I still think it will take time.

I may have been a tad hard, I dont consider myself in a BMW in my E86, nor did I in my E24, I consider them both completely distinct in terms of auto mobiles.

Not loyal as such...

But I have had a lot of brands over the years , Ford, Honda, Alfa, Bmw, Merc, Audi, Porsche, Renualt, Mitsubishi, Toyota , Subura, Vaxhuall, Volvo, VW, Fiat, MG, Suzuki, Mini, Seat

I can honestly say Bmw seem to make the best all round cars so therefor I guess I have "Become" Loyal to the brand now :) , you struggle to find the same looks and build quality etc that and they have a car for every occassion :D

Its too soon to be loyal to BMW as we're only 2 months in to ownership. We'd probably have been loyal to Honda if they hadn't decided they were'nt going to make fast cars anymore.

Mrs Rhodesey is VERY loyal to Volvo.

No loyalty at all, just buy whatever we like the look of...

me:

Vauxhall Astra
Peugeot 206 XS
Alfa 147
Peugeot 206 GTi
BMW Z4
Citroen DS3

mrs gannet:

Some Skoda pass me down from before I knew her
Seat Marbella
Nissan Micra Twist
Citroen Saxo VTR
Mazda 2 Sport

fair collection between us :D

1st car - VW
2nd car - Saxo VTR
3rd car - E46 3 series
4th car - Z4

Also now have resurrected an old Polo Gti that's been in the family for years.

Not a massive fan of E89 styling, so think when it comes to replacing my zed, it will probably be with a newer E85 with less miles, and will likely be an ///M

On my 5th Bm,love the rear wheel drive & think the build qaulity is first class.Have test drove others in the past but still go back to bm's.when we go to change our daily runner will try various marks before making up our mind .

No brand loyalty here whatsoever... IMO BMW make some of the most boring cars on the planet, but I do like the Z4 (and the X5, strangely). I like the e89 and I like the sound of the Z2, but other than that there is no way I'd buy a 3-series or a 5-series, and hell would freeze over before I'd get into a 1-series!

M3 no good to you?

Personally I can't see me keeping up with the maintenance costs of an M (or the fuel economy), but granted the M3 and M5 are quite fun cars in terms of the driving experience... still think other than the engine though they are a bit on the boring side.

Always been an admirer of the BMW marque. I like their driver focus image along with the quality of their cars. That said the standard of that quality seems to have dropped in recent times, and some of the designs, especially the new 1 series is somewhat left to be desired.
