How loud should the standard 3.0i exhaust be?

Love that vid, Andy.

I'd be interested to test drive a 3.0si to see what the stock exhaust sounds like compared to the 2.5si; lots of reports of not being able to hear it. I can always hear mine - on the motorway it's just a low humming sound, but it's definitely not silent. It's probably worse at 75mph than 85mph, but not unpleasant, especially when everybody slows down going up a hill and you just sail on. :D

yep the 3.0si seems the same for me - don;t quote me but I presume the system is the same as the 2.5si is a 3 ltr lump anyway in theory? I popped a vid above somewhere of stock noise on the drive stationary.

You're welcome to have a ride in mine if you're anywhere near North London! :)

Well I'm about a mile from N6, so pretty close!

Hmm, might take you up on that at some point. Really like the look of the coupe.

Andy, is that complete straight through all the way to the headers? Just backbox and centre pipe?

No it's just the backbox that's straight through. Middle resonators still intact as standard and back from them.

Was almost tempted to try getting rid of the middle resonators as well and see how that sounds but tbh it's plenty good enough for me how it is.

Yeah should be about £200 iirc, plus you can get slightly bigger tips to fill out the gap in the bumper a bit better. To anyone else it looks standard too, not a fan of fancy tips, standard look is best IMO. Get flanges fitted for an extra £30 or so on the original backbox and you can simply bolt that back on come sale time or if you get bored of it

My new black 3.0si is a little too sedate sounding for my liking, there are definitely muted pops and crackles and it has quite a solid bassy growl when pottering around but not in my opinion the way a relatively powerful sports car should sound. It might even be a little quieter than my previous 2003 2.5i. I have taken the foam out of the sound generator but I think that sound is a little synthetic.

I am thinking of having the backbox removed or modified as per many posts on this forum in the next few weeks and this video is very encouraging!

Silly question - is at legal? I want mine to sound like that with the pops but I won't do anything about it if its not legal and won't pass mots etc? :|

Emissions = the same as standard so no problem

Noise = Your vehicle may fail the MOT due to noise levels if deemed to be excessive by the MOT inspector As per the rules.
Use an MOT centre you trust and know and I've no reason to believe it would fail. I personally use the same centre every year, got to know the guys and I know they wouldn't fail it unless it was stupidly loud, which it isn't (Had an MR2 that was much louder!). At idle it's barely different from standard, and when they revved it in the garage that did it, it really wasn't that loud compared to some others that were there. Porsche 911 and an M5 they had in were twice as loud so really not too worried about. If it does fail, no problem, I'll just unbolt the pipes and bolt back on the standard box, 5 min job! I can't guarantee either way, its up to you at the end of the day ;) Can't imagine its any louder than an Eisenmann to be fair!

Haven't you taken the back box out? I thought that makes it illegal if you get stopped?

I don't know on these things so want to know because I want mine to sound like it! Lol

Edited this post as the rules on noise etc are a bit of a grey area, as usual. Even speaking to some ex traffic chaps for their take on it.
I can't advise you either way to be honest as I don't want to give you false info. I'm not worried about it personally, I think you would be hard done by to get in trouble for it. Just don't floor it when your driving past the BiB :)

Ok cool -
It's only cos I'm a p***y and don't want to get done if I get pulled over but then again I haven't been pulled over yet!

:P
