How loud should the standard 3.0i exhaust be?

Another thing I noticed on the recent long journey to Scotland was that the exhaust is quite loud, it's very noticeable when any amount of acceleration is applied and is only 'silent' while cruising at low speeds. I was just wondering if this is how they all are, or if mine may have a hole or something. The exhaust on my previous 530i was very quiet, but I thought as this is a sports car maybe it's deliberate? It's not really loud, Scorpion/Supersprint style, just louder than my old car.
 
Yep I'd check the foam in the sound generator. Could have been removed by the previous owner and you can pop it back in to quieten things down if the foam is kicking around somewhere (or you can just add some in yourself).
 
Deffo sound gen, standard exhaust is quiet as a mouse. If it's not the sound gen with both bits of foam out then probably a hole!

My coupe is the same, only really noticed it after driving long distances on a recent trip across Europe , it goes noticeably louder and deeper which sounds great. :driving: :)

(Ive not checked, but I suspect my sound generator is standard)
 
mine is quite loud - and that is noticable coming from the tips themselves when standing behind the car. I've got a vid - I'll stick it on later...
 
I would have thought sitting within a few feet of the back box will make the sound more noticable..
 
The problem is "loud" is highly subjective. I'm sure the Zed is intentionally louder than a 530i. I'm sure mine is completely stock. IMO it's a bit loud at full throttle, but at highway cruising speed (top up, which should still be slightly louder than a coupe) only the faintest drone is discernible if you're really listening for it. The road noise is significantly louder, and my tyres are reputedly on the quiet side. (Michelin SSs) Also, for reference, it appears 3.0i and si cat back facelift exhaust are exactly the same according to realoem.com.
 
Why would the sound gen make a difference to the exhaust note? When I removed the piece from the bulkhead, I just got more engine noise. I have always found the exhaust note quite prominent on my 3.0si. Not that I'm complaining - it's a sports car!
 
My zed has a decent exhaust note. Sound gen is more an "inside" noise.

Check the foam.... :thumbsup:

I loved the sound of mine for months after I bought it - foot down hard it screamed like a banshee then I had to do two return trips to Scotland and every time I went up an incline the drone was head bursting and difficult to live with

Checked and no foam in the generator - have now put some back in and happy now

Miss the sound when I'm just hooning around though but can always change back at any time
