3 years the first one, 2 years this one....I cant think of anything else I would rather have for the same money.

Neither of them has let me down once in 5 years of motoring.

Sorry, I disagree with this :P I had a Z4M R and I find my E89 35iS quicker, easier to control and far better made. I only ever intend to use it on a road so LSD not on my shopping list but to me the newer car handles just as well but just goes better :D I find the DCT gearbox in manual on the 35iS in sport mode far better than the awful manual box of the Z4M and very easy to control precisely. The suspension on Sport is as firm as the Z4M and it makes the steering almost exactly the same weight. Add lightening quick DCT gearchanges and it is great fun.

I believe the 35iS gets the same DCT setup as the E92 M3 which can only be good.

Definitely having had both there is only one clear winner for me; the E89 :)

Two months for me and I am totally besotted!

I've had many top-down drives already and, even with the outside temperature hovering around 2 or 3 degrees, the cabin is a wonderful place to be. As well as the comfort of heated seats, I've never come across a car heater as powerful. The thing works like a furnace!

Ask Stuart how useful lsd is on the road, surprised you don't seem to understand the benefit in day to day control. It sounds therefor logical that an automatic is more suitable for your drive style which is absolutely fine as for my business travel I also enjoy my X5 with auto box.

However the 35 is does not come close to the real sports car the e85/86 M was.
 
We have these discussions on here from time to time. The simple fact is that BMW aimed the E89 at a different audience to the E85/6. That means for some people the E89 is great because the E85/6 wasn't a car that appealed to them. For others, like me, the E89 is a disappointment. I think Maniac's views were very a sensible and balanced summary.

In addition the metal roof was a big plus point for some and a needless weight addition for others.

Like I say, targeted at different people. I know what pvr means - if you love the M the chances are you won't love an E89. The M is a classic M-car of old. An absence of nearly all electronic gizmos, no semi-automatic gearbox, no M mode I-drive electronic crap, just a manual gearbox, hydraulic steering, lovely mechanical diff and best of all one of the greatest car engines ever made.

If the 35iS is quicker than an M it can only by a gnats whisker as the 35i is a little slower than the M.

I understand the whole M not M thing as I have owned 3 of them

But mine comes with a M badge on the side .. put on by the factory at least (not my me)

I've owned M Z's and moved 3+ years ago from the last Z4M to the 35i. I didn't feel any downgrade at all and I have absolutely no idea what the gearbox comment refers to. I've had many M cars (inc. the M3) and the DCT box in the 35 is the equal of any M SMG / DCT. Especially now the paddles are sorted.

I now have a 35is on order and that says everything.

Also I fully agree with earlier comments regarding the end of this model having no bearing on buying one, these are now the best e89s BMW will make. Also we don't dont know what wil replace it, could be something very different!

Finally. I've driven the 4 and M4 (very close to buying one) and the M is special. But nothing has "moved on" too far and when I got back in the perfect cocoon of the Z4 it felt at least as special..
 
Every car is different, road surfaces vary considerably and everybody's driving style and needs will also differ. Enjoy the car you own, if you don't like it get something else :D

But that's probably because those who buy one are old codgers who want the best of both worlds :thumbsup:
 
Mr Bond. Do you have any more photos of the car ? Have you had the wing mirrors wrapped ? Any other mods ?

I just got lucky and found the best seat position with a few days. Just as well as I don't have electric adjustment and memory option! Exceptionally good seats it has to be said.

Hi .. No the z4 is factory standard, the mirrors on this model come with matt silver from the factory

Why has 'How long have you owned an E89?' turned into it's no M?
FFS :headbang: 99% of E89 owners don't give a sh!t if it is or not! However it seems like the E89 has got a few M owners backs up for some reason!
