how long have you had your private plate?

I dont think we actually own them I think we pay for the privilege to use that combination on our cars. DVLA can take them away,for example I have one on retention and have to pay £25 per year to keep it or else I lose it.
 
Got my wife's about three years ago, will get mine when I decide I have £500 to spend on some numbers and letters :D

Do you have to actually buy the plate number, then pay £25 a year to retain it when it is not on a vehicle ? Or can you just say 'I'm going to want that sometime in the future, here's £25 a year to reserve it until I can afford it ?' :?
 
I think you need to buy the right to use the plate.If you decide not to allocate it to a vehicle then you must pay £25 per year to retain the right.
 
Friend of mine bought A** 1 in the 70's I think for less than 1K it's worth in excess of 50K now :o

I recall the number plate that Joe Bugner the heavyweight boxer who beat Henry Cooper had on his Rolls Royce '1 ON U'. It was given to him by a fan and scrap metal dealer from Cambridge.

Also seen the snooker player Willie Thorne in his car with the plate '147 WT'.
 
Bought mine in 2007 with a small amount of money my grandma left me to remember her :cry: the letters and numbers have no significance to me or her but it is something that i can keep forever and never lose or damage, as a pose to a nice watch or something.
 
Technically they are correctly referred to as 'cherished registrations' because thats about all you can do with 'em. You never own them and they can be rescinded under some circumstances.

And if the UK did what France did a couple of years ago and moved to a completely new registration system (the old one used to end with the first two digits your 'department' or area postcode number) they could be redundant overnight! :(
 
I dont think they would get rid of them,they make too much money from them.As time goes on I can see a situation where they try to make more money and charge an extra annual fee, perhaps added to the car tax.
 
About 8 hours!! :D Paperwork's just come through, so just fitted. Nothing fancy, just a cheap Irish plate (£20) to disguise the year of the car. Not the first private plate I've had, had one on my old E30, sold it with the car.

Had a few private plates since 2000, but only one been kept (on the zed) as its a proper 'personal' registration.
 
I got S11URV from the dvla in 1998 when the 'S' suffix came out. From memory it cost me about £ 200. It was on my wife's cars until 2009 when I transferred it to my Z4.My name is Shurvinton and I've been called Shurv by my mates since i can remember,so it made me laugh when I could get it.Pointless vanity I know, but I don't care. :D

Delete that post before someone in gov or DVLA reads it! If there's a way of helping themselves to something else from your wallet they'll take it :x

Mine was sometime between 2001 and 2005, I can't actually remember when I got it. It is frightening to think how quick that time has passed since.
 
I bought mine in January this year, it is my initials, expensive, but worth it it think.

It's not on my Z though :oops:
