How important is Nav?

Even if someone said to me its no longer Sat nav just the MPG and music read out.I'd still want one..Its an LCD that pops out your dash? 
What's not to like.To be honest i'm possible looking at a Z4M to upgrade from my 3.0 so i'm starting fresh.And looking at pistonheads theres no really expensive ones without sat nav..And how can i go from a pop LCD sat nav in my mer 3.0 to nothing in my Z4M which is a upgrade?Can't be done.
Slight divergence to original topic so apologies but can I ask where you guys got your nav upgrades from ? There are a couple of sites on the internet offering the latest maps, 3D perspective, traffic light and speed cameras etc for £30. Is that where you got your upgrades from ?

If I was spending £20k+ on a car there's no way I'd NOT spec sat nav - only for the resale affect though. I personally find a TomTom more than sufficient, although I rarely use sat nav anyway.
FWIW I think the Z4 system is fugly, ruins the lines of the dash. I wasn't fussed about it when I bought my Z4 being towards the bottom of the price range of used Z4s and being a few years old too.

I didn't have nav on my old Z but have on my M. After getting round it's idiosyncrasies I actually quite like it and with the integration with the rest of the car plus the latest software speed cams, traffic alerts etc it is better than the year or two old tomtom I had to use in the previous Z.

I'm with flimper on this 100%. The pop up screen just looks so outdated and ruins the dash. It reminds me of an old Atari 2600 with a game cartridge sticking out the top. And it curdles my blood when every time I touch the stereo it springs back up to remind me how bad it looks.
Maybe on newer cars I'm with you that built on satnav is an essential. But on the older z's I think some folks just like being able to tell people that you have integrated nav whereas the reality of it is far less glamourous than it sounds. Anyone who has been to Currys in the last 3 years cannot seriously get excited about that lump of toast in my dash as a cutting edge LCD screen.

There was a chap in Germany who was quite popular in the early 1940's and he had a similar formula for concluding that the majority of people shared his opinion. I've forgotten his name though. It will come back to me.
Yes there's a divergence of opinion. But I'm not sure either side of the fence can be so bold as the extrapolate their opinion to 'the majority'.
Personally I agree that if I was buying a new or nearly new motor I'd be looking for SatNav these days, and I would do that partly with resale value in mind. But to me, if we are talking about maybe a 7 year old car, ..we have to be realistic,..some of the toys are starting to look a teeny bit dated. And personally I would rather not have the screen, ..I'd rather just have the car.
Try watching an episode of the orginal Knightrider,. and I expect you will be less enamoured with KITT's toys these days

The only thing that is annoying to me is the absence of postcode entry and speed cameras but it seems like that is corrected in the latest software updates ?
The voice commands are far more accurate than some of the rather vague Tom Tom/Garmin versions and its much easier to avoid going wrong IMO as well with the integrated Nav. Add that to not having to be worried about some scrote breaking into your car to try and steal it, absence of trailing wires, not having to fetch it out of one car into another, a single screen to control phone/DSP/CD/Radio and its a decent package.
The market dictates the system's importance and the market is clearly stating it expects Nav in the Z4M based on prices.
