How important is Nav?

Satnav is nice to have, but i would certainly not be put off by a car that does not have it these days. Well my phone has it, plus i have a tom tom :D If every other box is ticked then thats pretty good! Plus if you really want it, retro fit it  Thats why BMW's are so good imo

It is still faster then any aftermarket unit I have, works everywhere unlike my tom-tom that just does not work in london around high buildings. The screen is much bigger then the aftermarket units as well.

It is not just nav, it also does the phone, the iPod and the computer functions.

Finally, it is always there unlike my Tom Tom that is normally in the boot of a car. All in all, despite it possibly not the most modern of units, it works very well for me as well as the majority of car buyers that buy the top model.

I take the point that down the line there will be collectors who will want to buy examples which were top spec and had all the toys. But right now, for me, there are two things on my car that give away it's age, one is the registration plate, and the other is the Satnav. For this reason I'd rather not have it,..maybe another potential buyer might have the same opinion.

Personally I have no problem using an after maket Satnav in London whatsoever,..that represents about 95% of my use. But if the built in system was a bit more modern I would prefer to use it than get the other out of the boot and wire it up. Getting the perspective view might help, I'll check that link, thanks.

Remember the Z4 satnav is pretty much upgradeable to current spec (maps and OS) if you want

Also, although illogical, I think it's also a question of it being nice to have all the toys on your car.

I bet all the guys above who say they think its rubbish or prefer an aftermarket would have it like a shot if they could, if only for the above reasons. :poke:

Definitely not. As for the E89 Nav, definitely would.

To a stretch. The NAV IV in the Z4 is upgradeable to whatever version the last X3's are being shipped with, but all other new BMW's have iDrive which is on a different platform and has more possibilities. My wife's iDrive has insanely more features than the satnav and Ipod integration I cobbled together in my M.

But to say that an aftermarket Tomtom is better than the built-in satnav is a stretch too. Having the screen built-in, a large screen, voice commands spoken through the speakers, and integration with music (let it be radio, cd, 6 cd changer, mp3 compability on cdr's, aux in or ipod integration with aftermarket products) ranks much higher than a TomTom hanging from the window while you are deep and low in the Z4 driver seat.

The difference is mainly getting it sold, indeed. A car without satnav will just not hit any searches from people who want satnav in a car these days.

Where you talk about the Z4's satnav being upgradeable to whatever version the X3 ships with,...do you mean upgradable using CD's,..or do you mean changing the hardware ?

Upgradeable using CD's once you are owner of a NAV IV computer. And since AFAIK X3's and Z4's were all delivered with NAV IV...

there is 1 more consideration with the nav - you do get a few extras, not just the Nav.

Personally i think the dash looks alot more complete with the screen then without (my friend has an Aston DB9 and it has the same style pop up screen too) so i dont think it looks 1980's style but the new bmw system does look a bit fresher.

My Sat nav also has TV and other options, which although not regularly used are always nice to have (even if only for bragging rights), and as others have said i wasnt interested/ wouldn't have bought a Z4 without the screen :fuelfire: .

I have updated the software (download the latest firmware to a CD and put it in) and updated to the latest maps (you can buy or download) - it gives me the 3D perspective mode (which is a huge improvement) and i changed my background colours, added an ///M symbold to the start screen, removed the start warning screen, added night mode and all the newest suburbs and streets are included on the latest maps CD :D .

I have a TomTom and the only time it gets any use is when i have to travel and don't have the Z with me

How do you know, have you spoken to them all ? :?

Well the same question was asked a few weeks back here, same thoughts as back then really, when I wrote it I had already bought one without nav.

What I would add since then is that I have hardly had the stereo on let alone anything else, just been listening to the beautiful S54 music :sweetheart:

My thoughts - nav was/is vital on cars up to say 2 years old, where condition and mileage is very much the same therefore equipment levels determine the desirability. Seems to be more important on the coupe than the roadster.

Now, as a lot of the ///M cars are now getting on for 3-4 years old I think that condition and mileage becomes more important. The nav has been superseded twice now (E90 i-drive and then latest system as fitted in the E89) so by the time you come to sell it will probably be 3 generations out of date.

Nav cars will always be worth more than non-nav cars (either price or ease of resale or both) but if you pay less in the first place, then you can expect less when you come to sell it. 3 years ago when I looked for an ///M I wouldn't have touched one without nav, but I think differently now.

Nope - called extrapolation using a sample size :P

It's all relative. I bought mine without Nav, but then I got a low mileage 07 with limited toys, for the price of an average mile 06 with toys.

I just valued having a newer, low mileage car in-warranty over it being loaded with toys, for my budget.

When the time comes to sell I'll no doubt price it competitively against 06 models.

I should however qualify the above with the fact that I despise my Garmin Nuvi and would love an integrated system - Incidentally, has anyone installed an aftermarket (non-OEM) integrated sat-nav?

Nav is nice to have on a top spec car. The i-drive system does a lot of other stuff as well such as maintenance info etc but the maps don't look so different from the older system ones. As they get older it won't affect price much but will always make a car easier to sell on.

It's funny how all the people who don't have the Sat Nav think it a waster and would not pay anymore money for a car with it,tom toms are better etc.I've got Sat nav in my car and also have a Zumo 550 (very good sat nav) and i must say its really nice have inbuilt sat nav..it never got an address wrong.never looses reception. Its allways in the car,Got the onboard computer there all the info. And it looks Ultra cool with the roof down at nigth with the TV screen there.Come on guys how can you have a 30k+ car without Sat Nav?

I'd love an in car satnav, just not the Z4 model. The satnav I had in my Boxster was excellent and I couldn't have been without it.

Absolutely love mine, latest maps & firmware, speed camera alerts... TMC..

absolutely wouldn't be without it & would never now spec my first choice car without.

Wouldn't be without it either, also with the speed/light cams/alerts... Comes in very handy on the Wales runs too - quick glance at the map shows whether you need to back off or take a run up on the twisties :driving:

Just out of curiosity - have you ever used it ? (obviously not in your car as you don't have it ...)
