How important is Nav?

Seen a nice M Roadster, all options I want but no nav.

FSH,12 months BMW warranty.

How much does no nav knock off the resale price?

I don't think it is so much a case of how much the car is reduced in value, more likely whether you can sell it at all.

Look over all the cars for sale, the ones that hang around are the ones that do not have satnav.

There will always be a small number of people that deliberately will want a car without nav, but as the majority do want / expect to see it on a car like this, you will be targeting a smaller market.

In reality, the fact that you asked the question is that you really know the answer ...

Never ordered a car with nav yet (I always know were I'm going) and they all sold fast at a good price.

If I order a new 'M' I might consider nav for that, although I'm testing a 911 this week so not sure what the next car will be now :?

I love the Pro Nav system on the E89, but I guess a few years down the line, like with all technology, it will seem dated.

Kryton, what model of 911 are you testing... a Turbo ? :D :poke:

Always have Nav on my cars but why not just sell it with a decent £300 nav.......

Nav on E89 is great......as always....but entering addresses takes ages...on my RRS it's touch screen entry and full postcode.....

i think the nav is probably not as good as a cheap tom tom, even so i would be worried buying a M without nav just for resale reasons

+1

I use my TomTom 900 Series when I need it and it is portable. Used it last year on my German trip worked like a charm.

How often does one really need it? When one thinks about that it is not worth the extra expense.

My Z4 is 53 plate. I have to assume that those with the opinion that built in Sat Nav is essential have a newer Z than me and that there was a serious upgrade in the SatNav capability some time after mine came off the production line. I say this because the built in SatNav in my Z4 looks like something from a ZX Spectrum. I have never used it,.not once.., and am totally happy with my mid range Garmin. Another point I would make is that any Sat Nav will start to look a bit out of date after three years or so,...so a built system will become less and less valuable. Personally I would rather my Z did not have built in satnav, and for that matter I'd prefer it not to have the pop up screen which looks like something from the 1980's.

It is still faster then any aftermarket unit I have, works everywhere unlike my tom-tom that just does not work in london around high buildings. The screen is much bigger then the aftermarket units as well.

It is not just nav, it also does the phone, the iPod and the computer functions.

Finally, it is always there unlike my Tom Tom that is normally in the boot of a car. All in all, despite it possibly not the most modern of units, it works very well for me as well as the majority of car buyers that buy the top model.

I understand there are DVD ROM's you can buy to update the software. Do these just update maps, or do they also make changes to the way the system works and looks ? for example giving an angled 3D view as opposed to overhead ?

X2

Also, although illogical, I think it's also a question of it being nice to have all the toys on your car.

I bet all the guys above who say they think its rubbish or prefer an aftermarket would have it like a shot if they could, if only for the above reasons. :poke:

You have perspective mode from firmware 29 ( I think ) onwards. This is normally done via cd software placed in the drive. Have a look at outpost.com, they are the experts with regards navigation mods and updates to the firmware.

I take the point that down the line there will be collectors who will want to buy examples which were top spec and had all the toys. But right now, for me, there are two things on my car that give away it's age, one is the registration plate, and the other is the Satnav. For this reason I'd rather not have it,..maybe another potential buyer might have the same opinion.

Personally I have no problem using an after maket Satnav in London whatsoever,..that represents about 95% of my use. But if the built in system was a bit more modern I would prefer to use it than get the other out of the boot and wire it up. Getting the perspective view might help, I'll check that link, thanks.
