How I bought an SLK and ended up with a Z4

Hi, I have been using the forum for a little while but thought I would tell you all how I arrived here.

In October last year I bought a 04 plate Mercedes SLK from a garage in Derby. I had been after an open top 2 seater ‘weekend car’ for a while and had roughly 5k to spend. The original model SLK seemed to fit the bill and there were plenty within budget. A sliver 2 litre SLK caught my eye on Autotrader and following telephone inquiries and a test drive I bought it. On the final leg of the 200 mile drive home I began to hear an intermittent grinding noise coming from the engine bay and called my local garage for them to take a look. I also rang the garage I had bought it off to let them know the score. To cut a long story short it turned out that the SLK had a suspected camshaft and timing chain fault (a call to Mercedes confirmed that worn camshafts on the W170 engines are a common issue.) I was advised not to drive it as this could hammer the valve and cause the top to drop off and destroy the pistons! The estimated cost for parts and labour plus VAT was . . . . . . . wait for it . . . . . . £2,430. I was gutted! My garage advised that the car should be recovered back to the garage that sold it to me.

I rang the garage I had bought it from and emailed them all the details and they arranged collection saying they would have it looked over by a Mercedes dealership in Derby. Two weeks later and after several emails and phone calls (and many sleepless nights) I got their verdict: they diagnosed the same fault as my local garage and the repair costs were about the same.
I received this news 5 days before we were due to go on a driving holiday around the East Coast in our new car. The garage owner said it wasn’t worth them paying for the repair and offered me my money back, I would need to bring back all the SLK documentation and complete some paperwork. He also said they had several cars in stock that I might be interested in if I wanted to use the 5k to buy something else. Since the garage had been very good about the whole affair I was quite happy to check out their stock.

We set off to Derby (again) and on the way down a quick check on their website showed only one car that fitted the bill: an unmarked 56 plate Z4 2.0i Sport in titanium silver, high miles but a FSH. It was up for £6,995. I had never considered a Z4 (don’t ask me why) and although this was 2k more than the SLK I went for a test drive. Wow – what a machine, there was no comparison to the SLK, which in hindsight did feel dated and certainly wasn’t as smooth to drive.
I offered £6,500 for the beauty and they accepted.

5 days later we were blasting down East Coast roads under blue skies in our open top Z4 :D

Good result in the end and hats off to the garage that sold you the duff SLK. Sounds like they did the honourable thing and didn't make like too difficult in the process.

Well done! I was exactly the same when initially considering a convertible and hadn't really gotten round to the Z4.

Looks like you found a good one and nice that the garage were so decent about the problems with the Merc.

Welcome along to the forum... now lets see some more pics of your lovely Zed and the driving holiday :) :driving:

Great that you got sorted in the end and what a lovely looking Zed.

I really enjoyed my 2.0i Sport and if you hold onto the revs you will find that you have a very capable Zed on the road.

Welcome to the Forum.

:driving:

Enjoy your car :driving:
IMO the E85 Z4 is ageing gracefully and in fact it's looking better for having a bit of age.

Good turn out in the end, your zed looks like a nice example :)
Good to hear the garage/dealer was fair about the situation with the SLK, hear to many bad stories about garages, so hats off to them.

Enjoy the zed :driving:

That's a good story and you are happy with the Z.

I wonder how many other owners on here came to the Z4 from an odd route.

I too had never considered a Z4, had a Nissan 370, Cayman S and SLK on my radar, my wife preferred the Boxster S and then in a moment of madness started searching for an M3 and had the Eureka moment.

Z4 = Hard Top & Convertible with the 6 cyl peach of an engine mated to that DCT gearbox.

Started searching for those and was able to compare a Cayman S and Z4 side by side. Z4 for easily won out.

I guess some people will think I'm mad and choose the wrong car, however, I'm really happy with this car.

It's one of those cars I can't wait to grab the keys and go for a spin in it. :driving: :D

Must have been traumatic at the time, but you have ended up in the best possible place.

I bet that the SlK Forum members are not up to the standard you will find here! :D

Enjoy the Zed

Thanks for such a warm welcome.

To pick up on a couple of responses . . .
It is interesting how owners ended up with their Z4's - whether they made a rational decision after much consideration, or whether like me the decision was sort of made for them.
The enthusiasm owners have for their Z4's is obvious, we all know the feeling of sliding into those low seats and firing up that engine. Every journey gives me a buzz.
I like this forum, very friendly members and lots of knowledge to tap into - long may it continue.

More pics were requested so here they are . . .

Congrulations! Great colour for Z4. I love those ///M seats. Best option you could get. Also nice that your car is facelifted version.

Thanks, I was very fortunate that the garage had such I nicely spec'd car in stock. What struck me first was the colour and the alloys, it really made the car look special. If I hadn't been in that situation I probably would have shopped a round for a 2.5 or 3.0 litre, but hey I'm not complaining.
