How Fast????

How fast will my Coupe 3.0siSE go? I know it's limited to 155mph, but if it wasn't limited what would it do? Just curious!!

Cheers

On the computer it goes up to 167mph, but is restricted to 155 so i'm guessing if you got it de-restricted then 165 maybe.

I can't see it doing much more than 155. Would of guessed at still being under 160 (real speed, not what is indicated on the dial).

Maybe a crazy question but has anyone ever taken their car to the limiter? I ask because I've witnessed cars well exceeding their limiters, for example, my friend has had 174mph out of his e92 m3 - and he had not had it de restricted! Also BMWCAR magazine had 166 out of their e39 m5 long termer (on a proving grounds bowl with independent speed measuring equip)

Not a majorly relevant point - but joggged my mind...

My old 3.8 M5 would only do a GPS-indicated 157mph in 6th, but would do a GPS-indicated 170mph in 5th (on the soft rev limiter).

Don't know what my Z4MC will do yet (in 5th or 6th) as I've not taken it my favourite bits of autobahn yet.

I've also driven an e60 M5 and that would happily sit on the speed limiter at 170mph - although there was plenty of power/revs left - and have been in unlimited ones showing an indicated 200mph.

I need to test this out. I got to 150* (on the speedo) and it felt like it wanted to keep going.

* On a de-restricted road of course, officer.

As a Goodyear associate, we have access to an inclined oval track in Blainville, Quebec a few times a year for customer ride and drives. In May of last year, I took my own 2003 3.0 (on 18" BBS with Eagle F1 AS) up to a max of 154mph GPS speed (5th and 6th gear the same). There was a 10-15mph wind on that day.

In May of this year, now running on 19" Eagle F1 Asymmetrics with Alpina Dynamics (slightly lighter wheel/tire assy.) and a full Alpina spoiler kit, the car has gone up to 161mph in 5th gear (156 in 6th) GPS speed. This new set-up also gave the car much improved stability (from increased spoiler downforce and tire design/footprint) than last year's run. The wind was also less than 5mph. (40 psi on outside tires, 36 on the inside).

On pre-facelift cars if you extrapolate the ratio of manual top speed to automatic top speed across the range, the manual 3.0i (the only one with a limiter) should do approximately 159mph with the limiter removed. And if that's the case, then I'd expect a 3.0si roadster to be good for 163-165mph, and the coupe a few mph quicker (more favourable aerodynamics).

I can't imagine that speed in the Z4 roadster... it feels a bit unstable at 90+ (where allowed of course)... add in the poor old softtop at that speed... yikes... flap flap flap lol

i've hit 140+ mph quite a few times and my car feels like its gliding. ive had the top up and i do hear the flap flap flap of the wind, but that doesnt seem to have an effect on the ride quality. but honestly.. i dont have time to pay attention to that flapping noise only because im concentrating on driving safely.

140+ mph...Driving Safely?????? :?

Driving at those speeds is very tiring I find, 110% concentration, anticipating hazards in the far distance, direction of the road - even a slight curve can be a lot at those speeds.

depends on the road and conditions and driver ability...

cant say Ive noticed any instability at any speed...

+1. Me neither. You just need concentration and it's fine.

I've taken mine up to about 260kph, as per the speedo, on fifth gear. I chickened out a few seconds later and backed off though..

The car felt absolutely fine too.
