How fast have you been?

Ok, so a couple of weeks back I was up early one sunny Sunday morning and suddenly realised the dual carriage way I was on was not only dead straight for 2 miles but also completely deserted!

Being as I haven’t really attempted a top speed record since getting my car 3 months ago I thought I’d see what she could do!

I got to the naughty side of 140 (with the roof down) before I lost my nerve. It seemed like an eternity and really did require absolute concentration and awareness - I couldn’t have been there for more than a few moments until it dawned on me that I was pushing my luck!

Fact is that if a tire failed at that speed I’d have lost control and died - no questions. But gee... you do feel alive for those few moments!

Another point of discussion is comfort zones... i feel very in control up to 110 anything over that then it needs total concentration and commitment. It's odd how sharp the drop off is past 110/120 it doesn’t feel safe. I wondered if anyone felt the same?

I dont want to start a discussion about the rights and wrongs of speeding or get a lecture on how irresponsible it is - fact is I was the only person within 2 miles and only putting myself in danger.

So if you do tend to got a little faster than you should what’s your record? How did it feel?

I have taken mine to 240kph. Did not feel safe. I feel safe around 200kph. Maybe I am just chicken.

I was in The Fatherland last year and had rented a MB C350 and with that my comfort zone was also around 180-200kph.

Just so no ones gets confused I was talking mph! I'd be a right geek to get excited about 140kpm!
So 240kmp about 150mph...

I can't see as anythign will come of it... you need a bit more evidence that someone boasting on a forum to prosecute - if thats what you are worried about. Still people dont have to if they dont want to.

140 felt fine but only stayed there for a few seconds but the car feels fine cruising at 120 even 130 was OK but then my old Calibra would cruise all day at 100-110 when driving down to Le-Mans so i will expect a bit more when taking the Z4 this year.

Never had mine above 70mph   it is the only the 2.0 after all.

Seriously though it is a buzz driving fast with the roof down, we have a 2 mile long straight down some country roads by the office, its my stress relief on a sunny day - can't beat it :D

I was doing 115 to 120 MPH. I was watching traffic on the freeway more than the speedometer. It was in traffic in the high speed lane with my granddaughter beside me. She is 18. She said “you sure don’t drive like a grandpa!” I told her “someone has to be your poor example.” Now that was about as stupid as could be. But the damn Zed is egging me on. I am so ashamed. I have gone much faster in my life, but that was on a drag strip where I should be doing things like that. :(

In germany last year saw mine go off the clock, about a needle width past the 160 marker, intrestingly my sat nav stored a maximum top speed of 157, this was with roof up and a long unrestricted autobahn run at about 5;30 in the morning, felt secure and safe no drama at all...

I travel to Southern Germany quite a bit on business and there is a strip of autobahn south of Stuttgart that all of the locals treat as their race track.

I have done 220 km/h (approx 135 mp/h) in a BMW 5 series hire car, in good weather and a dry road and STILL had to look in my rear view mirror as a Benz came tearing up behind me with it's lights flashing so that it could pass me. Worst of all, and I'm not being sexist here, but it was a blonde woman driver (I think... sometimes it's hard to tell a German man with long flowing locks and a woman apart  )

I need my licence too much to try that kind of thing here in the UK :!:

Tops for me was about 160 km/h (100 mph) in city highway.
A law passed this year, allows the cops here to tow your vehicle and suspend your license for 7 days on the spot (charged with street racing) if you were going 50km/h over the posted limit.

The picture below is of me begining a high speed run in a 997. Vic Elford (Porsche driver and legend) was at the wheel and we hit 165 mph magically and very quickly. Of course this was a controled area (on the tarmac at Mayport Naval Airstation, FL). I won't begin to go into my highspeed stupidity over the years! :driving:

150mph on an Autobahn. Roof up it felt pretty planted still and had plenty of go left in it but my turn off came up so I had to ease it back down. Would have been nice to have seen it up to its Vmax but as you say those sorts of speeds are not to be taken lightly even if traffic is no issue and the environment (and law) allows for it.

WELL my little 2.5 has been up to 135 MPH and it was kind of light on its feet so to speak. I see where it should do 146 and will try again on a smoother wide open road sometime. I am way past the age where I should know better but what a rush!

I've been up to 150MPH in Germany, but the quality of the road surface is key here. On the highway between Toronto and St Catherines in Ontario, to me anything over 130KPH feels dodgy; but on a certain stretch of highway in Germany between here and the 'Ring, when its dry and empty - 140MPH+ with ease...

We are all used to it now, but my passengers always comment it never feels like we are going as quick as we are?

If you can do that with 90BHP less than the M and a soft top, I wonder what ours will do derestricted? 170-175MPH?

When my car was relatively new and I had NO brains. I was in the california desert with the top down and decided to see what it would do. All I know for sure that I went over 150mph in my 2003 Z4 2.5i steptronic. I am aware that I really wasn't going that fast and the car felt really light at that speed. Of course, when I was in Utah, same trip, 130mph felt just fine. :D I have never been above 110 since. I got it out of my system? :driving:

I can easily hit 120mph on the front straight at my local track (Portland Int. Raceway) and about 115mph on the backside straight. I have now logged a couple hundred laps there this year at these speeds.

I don't do speed runs on public roadways.
