Hello everybody,

I wanted to introduce myself and my new purchase. A little bit of background story about how I came about having this car and what made me want to purchase the car and how helpful this forum was in providing info to me upto the purchase etc.

My background is I've been a BMW tech for about 15 years now and when I was ab apprentice Z4's were around but I wouldn't say they were common. I remember going out in a phoenix yellow E86 3.0si and being blown away by the induction noise into the cabin and the overall performance of the car. I also remember at the time thinking it was a very unique shape, I wouldn't say I was overly flattered with the shape at the time but I liked it.

Fast forward a few years and I've had many many BMW's, E36, E46, E87, F11 and loads in between.

I developed quite an interest for track days and built up quite a well specced E46 330ci. It had GAZ monos, pro race, rs29 etc but children came along and while building this car I listened to Internet rules a bit too much and ended up pretty much ruining the car for road use, on track it was lovely but on the road it was pretty awful, the monos were 330 challenge spec and made the car so hard it was almost undriveable over the tops. It looked lovely though!

I put it back to standard and sold most of the bits off the car, drove it for a while and then sold the car itself. I knocked about in a few R56 minis but couldn't really get on with them so sold those and then found my way into the E86.

So the E86, its a 3.0si manual that's done 101k. It's a really really clean car as you can see from the pictures below. Initial impressions are and don't laugh because I've never had a car like this before, I'm still not 100% sure about it. I've never had an e85 or e86 and all the cars I've had before have been saloons, coupes or hatchbacks so it's completely alien to me a car like this. So in the previous cars you're sat almost in the middle of the car, loads of visibility around you and loads of cabin room. The Z is very small inside, I'm only 5ft 8 and it feels small to me, the visibility out of the car as well I think is something I'm going to have to get used to. The windscreen feels tiny and you can't see a great deal out of the back of the car. I do love though the view of the rear quarters in the mirrors!!!

The positives of the car are without a doubt the N52, what a glorious glorious engine BMW made. It sounds amazing, goes amazing, is simple to work on and is just great. The performance and actual driving of the Z4 is definitely one of the best cars I've had, it's not a saloon car that's been made into a sports car, it is a sports car and you can tell that.

I want to keep costs down really and would like to do the odd track day in the car so the plan going forward is a set of budget coilovers, polybush the rear trailing arms as the rear end is vague so the rtab are shot. Z4M front control arm bushes, these make night and day difference to an e46 and just enjoy it really. I want to get the steering wheel retrimmed in alcantara, the central locking doesn't work and the glovebox lid had fallen off, all this will be sorted.

It's already had a new waterpump, thermostat, dsc unit and brake pipes so they're all common things done. The rocker cover gasket was leaking when I bought it to the point the cats were soaked in oil so I've fitted a new rocker cover with valvetronic motor gasket and multiplug gasket.

Hi and welcome to the forum Andy from a serial E86 owner.

A BMW tech for 15 years - you sound like someone who'd have a lot to offer on here!

Your 330i sounds great as a track car, but it's probably all to tempting to make it too extreme for road use. At least you know what to avoid this time.

The N52 is a fantastic engine, which is why I chose one for my daily driver, and it sounds like some of the more common issues on your car have already been dealt with which is a bonus.

If you do fit coil-overs it might be worth finding some with adjustable rebound and compression, otherwise what works well on track may feel horrible on UK pot-holed roads!

Anyway I'll be looking forward to your updates.

We've all been there!

While they might not be the best from an aesthetic PoV, can I strongly recommend you consider running 17s on your Z4? Square setup really helps to dial out the natural understeer, and the extra sidewall makes it possible to run coilovers on the road without ruining your car. I run BC Racing kit, on their default/street spec springs, and at close to max ride height.

I run a set from a E89 on mine, and the extra few mm of offset helps fill the arches a little better than the E85/6 OEM 17s. As an added bonus, they are OEM strong, cheap to replace and lighter than the OEM 18s.

What settings do you run on your BC set up and can you share your alignment settings with me please ? 8)

Love the 405 wheels on the Coupe, they're one of my favourite wheels on the Fseries cars (sold as a winter option) but look good on the Zed, too.
Your Coupe looks lovely in silver and as the waterpump, thermo and brake hardlines are done, you should be sorted for a good while.
Enjoy!

Absolutely. It's a really simple road/track compromise setup, and I tweak the damping between the two.

I'm running 2deg of camber either side on the front, and 2.5deg either side on the rear. I run zero toe.

This gives a really nice and neutral handling car on track, helping to dial out some of the understeer and counteract the lack of steering feel, but doesn't tramline excessively on the road.

Thanks for the replies and advice everybody.

Mr Tidy I've actually got a set of 17's believe it or not from an X3. Style 304 I think. They're 17 x 8 or possibly 7.5 ET34 from my e46 so I think a decent set of 225/45/17 tyres would do the job as a set of track wheels and i think they might look alright.

On the subject of coilovers I'm really between a rock and a hard place with what to get. I would quite like a set of bc's but honestly I think I'll only be doing 2 maybe 3 track days a year max so a 1k set of coilovers seems a bit expensive for what I need. I keep looking at stance plus ultra (I know I know) everyone will say they're naff etc but they have to be better than 100k old standard stuff. Also on the stance plus website it says the ultras are meant for occasional track use!

Another option and I don't know if I'm right with this would be to purchase some coilovers for an e46 which I believe would fit. Somebody I used to chat to built an e46 330i track car and fitted a set of JOM NJT extreme coilovers which are basically a set of damping adjustable JOM's meant for occasional track use, would these work on the Z4 chassis?

Did a few little bits and pieces today. I found a small stubby aerial lying around in my toolbox so popped that on for now!!

Looks a bit better for the time being, I'll upgrade to a proper beemer jobby when I can.

Another job I've been meaning to get done was remove the M sport wheel and send it off to royals, it doesn't look so bad in the pictures but it's pretty shot tbh. Removed it today and stripped all the trims off and posted off to Royals, I've chosen alcanatara with M tri colour stitching, I'm hoping it'll look nice. Pics of wheel fully stripped down. I also need to refurb the spoke covers if any one has any tips?

Lastly when I bought the car the glovebox lid was in the boot. A really helpful fella who I've bought some bits off in the past sorted me a glovebox lid and housing so I picked those up today ready to be fitted.
