how did you get into "sports cars"?

I suppose at heart, I'm a jap car man, but the Z4 is making a very good job at converting me to European cars :)

Me too, always liked Jap cars.

I got my first 2 seater about 8 years ago which was a MK2 Toyota MR2, we no longer needed a 4/5 seater for every day use as son had his own car, its the longest I'v ever kept a car (4 years) great little sports car.
Then I had a Lexus/Toyota Soarer, not excactly a sports car but a sports coupe.
Then I had a Toyota Supra TT which I have to admit I am missing after recently selling to purchase my Z4, which I am also loving.

Chap at work turned up this morning in his Evo VIII - black, black wheel, Brembo brakes on show - not a true sports car, but it looked double hard! V nice.

A friend hit a deer in his newish XKR last week (antler through the bonnet!) and had to resort to his backup, a 996 C4S, when asked how it was in the snow...
"No problem... the roads weren't too bad until I got off the M40, and the 911 is a superlative snow car!"
Another reason to get one.

my dad ws always into cars and from growing up I always wanted a fast car. Started off in fiestas and kas then got the GTTDI which was a great car and hen changing was lookingfor a e46 coup when my dad talke me into the z by saying "how often do u really use ur back seats!?" and that was that. :D

I just like my small sporty cars, no need for back seats and 4 doors and i like my cars to be abit different.

I love RWD now aswell since having my mk1 mr2, the Z4 is my first BMW and i cant wait to get my next which will hopefully be an E90 330d M Sport Coupe.

My first sports car, had my share of hot hatches and coupe in the 80's / 90's. Thought I would treat myself now all the house stuff is out the way. Bought my Ducati first a few years ago, then this year the Z4..... happy chappie :D :D

Really not sure - my parents drove Skodas and Ladas (we had a bright orange one) my Dad was really impressed with it  The fastest car they ever owned was a 1.1 Astra - though my Dad was into Motor Bikes, apart from my Honda C50 never really wanted a MB. I learnt to drive in a Farm Landrover - first vehicle i drove was a tractor. My friends all drove bettles, metros and other girlie cars. i saw an old red Spitfire when i was 18 and loved the look of it, originally it was never about the speed, more the looks of a sports car. Saw a white porsche in a film, that looked as though it was glued to the road as it cornered, that was it wanted to upgrade to porsche. Got an old 924 turbo when i was 21 and then realised you needed to have and spend a decent amount on a proper sportscar. :( My current partner bought a 350z on a whim back in 03 and after driving that (he is very precious about that car and only let me drive it under supervision  ) so i wanted something that would give it a run for its money.

Now i have the Z4M, it has the looks and the power and will only swap it for when i can afford a new 911 or Aston martin.

In my opinion I think you didn't just give it a run for it's money, you beat it with a stick and pushed into the ditch as well....

New Astons cost $225 grand here, i could get divorced if you're looking for a new friend

Ive always loved driving right from before I really could/should.

Had fairly mundane cars before the zed though. went to the motorshow a few years back and mrs gannet said she liked the z4... time was right, bought it and love it

interesting stories here - good thread :D

i can tell you some stories about the 350z and it's.... reliability.

next time you're in it, you can really annoy him by just flicking the plastics on the dash or the center console and then give an unsatisfied "hmm".
no words need to be said, the sound of cheap plastic will echo quite nicely in the silence ;)

When I was a kiddie I built an airfix model of a Porsche 928 (with the chequered seats) and it became a bit of an obsession. I never got one but it made me look at all cars differently from then on :D

Mate's older brother took me for a drive in his new Morgan V8 when I was 17. I wanted that 'wind in the hair' 'my car's only got two seats so tough' image.
My second car was an MGB - the sills fell off when I tried to use the jacking point - didn't read the owners manual which advised against jacking up the car there :) Then the petrol tank leaked and it ran a set of kin pins every MOT. Loved it so much I started buying them and doing them up. I have owned many MGs and always intended to buy one again when I was old(er).

Thing was I was seduced by a S2000 all noise and Jap reliability- fantastic car. Now on my second Zed. God I love sports cars and would have a V12 vantage drop top if I ever win the Lottery.

The cover for the sat nav is held down with tape, but having already pointed out how naff the 350z is in inside - he thought it rather funny when my glove box dropped off after i had it for a couple of months. :x What silence, the 350z is fairly stripped inside and you cannot hear yourself think when its not moving - i need ear defenders when you drive it, at least you cant hear the dash rattling. Also we have had the 350z for 5 odd years and nothing has ever gone wrong with it though it has only done 13k - it is super pampered. Unlike all my cars, slk, tt and even the M have all had various niggles from new fan to full dsg gearbox for the TT

The 350z has been tweaked high flow cats, custom exhaust etc, so it is a bit quicker than usual, but the Z does show it a clean pair of heels, though drifting in the nissan is more fun than the M. I will be driving the M for a while unless i want to live in the Aston Martin so your marriage is safe.

really? I had an 03 zed from new and had nothing but major arseache with the car.

I had the rear driveshafts replaced three times during the time I owned it.
I had the gearbox replaced under warranty twice, as 4th gear was a pig and 6th gear needed a mallet to engage.
the clutch was forever sticking
the tyres were always feathering despite how many times you get it aligned.
front suspension bushes went after 20k of driving.
driver side window occasionaly never opened.. or worse, never shut (had to discon. battery and wait 30 mins befure you could shut it!)

oh.. and the paint falls of it if you so much as look at it angrily.
AND. lol.. the road noise on all but the smoothest of surfaces is ridiculous!

but with all this said, it's a good driving pleasure when it works :P

Thats weird, I had a similar thing as well, except it was a model of one of my two all-time favourite classic cars, a Lancia Stratos - the other (real one) was a red MkII Golf GTi 8-valve that I gave to my bitch ex-wife (No.2 of 3) in a divorce settlement. Ahhhhhh...

I got an interest in cars through my dad: I grew up (bearing in mind I was born in 1978) with my dad owning a few modified Ford Capri's . Not the best car in the world by any means, but good fun to be in. That started me off. We often went to Knockhill to watch any motorsport (and occasionally Cowdenbeath stockcars) when I was a teenager, so I guess that helped too.

I can't imagine owning a "normal" car now as I've driven mainly hot hatches (and now the Z4) that I find them soooooo dull. Even if I end up with kids I still think it'll be an interesting family waggon rather than a run-of-the-mill Ford Mondeo or the like.

I got into sports cars via my dad who always had one lurking about in the garage.

He had countless TVR's, Lotus's and Triumphs (requiring countless days of swearing under the bonnet on cold winter nights). Even now at almost 60 he has a Corvette.

I started out with a couple of Mini's (one of which was modified to barkingly mad proportions) and it has escalated from there.

I guess I have speed in my veins

Odd, really. No one in my family has ever had a sports car, and I'd had no interest in them. I moved to Chicago in 1986 and my Honda was promptly stolen, and I decided I could get by without a car in the city - I didn't drive again for 14 years. My grandmother had a heart attack during Thanksgiving 1999, and I decided I wanted to visit more often; it made more sense to drive than try to fly home every month or so, so I began looking for a Honda Civic on Autotrader. Someone had miscategorized their 911SC in the Honda section, and I realized that for the same money as a new Honda, I could get a Porsche - an idea I found intriguing.

I didn't really need the car for driving in Chicago so the fact it was impractical as a daily driver was a non-issue, and it would make the road trips home more fun and interesting. Research showed the 911SC was viewed as a solid "starter Porsche" so the decision was made. I found a nice example in Florida and made the deal. In January 2000, a friend took me take the IL driving test, and later that morning got on a plane, so my first driving experience in over a decade was driving a 1983 911SC targa for 1200 miles. Within a year I also owned a 1983 944 and 928S (below is a poor shot of them, taken one winter). I've owned sports cars ever since.
