How can you tell if a car has a Tracker fitted?

Yep. Original owner said mine didn't have one. Alpina register told me that Sytner had fitted them as standard. Called tracker with the VIN, they confirmed the car had one and it was alive and I paid the subscription. Done

Mine isn't

Mine has two VINs and the Alpina one is hidden away. My tracker is registered to that one.

It's that simple to discover if one is fitted, but tell me how to find it. I don't know what it looks like and I tried googling how to locate it. I couldn't find anything. The GPS enabled ones will be easier to find as they need an antenna with line of site to the satellites so find the antenna and track back

Anybody have any idea?

By the way I know the answer and it was shockingly easy.

Steal it and see how quickly you get caught?

Pretty sure mine has one fitted under the passenger seat as I found this hooked upto a small battery, the part numbers aren't BMW and there is an antenna running up the A pillar that has been routed with duct tape:

As far as I am aware it could be hidden anywhere in your car. Easiest way would prob be to pull back the door seals and look for a thin black antenna wire.

Does any one pay there subscription?

How much was it?

Because when I got my insurance quote I asked how much it went down with an active tracker, they then gave me a new quote that was £75 more. I asked how they work that out? They didn't know

No it's much easier just to phone tracker as stated above.

Top tip! The garage I bought my 5er from said that they thought it had a Tracker fitted, but didn't have any paperwork from the previous owner...

I'd quibble over the £90 to test it unless it means a bloke coming out to check its batteries. They told me mine was alive when I phoned them

Which is, in my humble opinion, a total rip off!

When I bought my M5 in 2005, I paid the "Lifetime" subscription, which was then £355. Recently I was wondering how I would know whether it was actually working or not, so I contacted Tracker, and I got this response:

The last communication received from the unit was a healthy uplink back in 2007, as the unit was installed back in 2001 and you're report of the vehicle's battery going flat, I would recommend a full inspection on the TRACKER unit.
This can be raised and booked with a Technical Support agent, current cost for inspection is £99.00.

Surely if I have paid for a lifetime subscription, I shouldn't have to pay to ascertain whether it's working or not - especially on something that you depend on to just sit there quietly, perhaps for years, before it might have to do something? And if they haven't had any communication from the unit since 2007, why didn't they contact me to warn me that there might be a problem?!

My insurance doesn't require a Tracker, so I haven't bothered having the inspection carried out. I know full well that if I do, they will try to tell me that the unit is not working and that I'll have to buy a brand new one at full price.

Nice to see we are telling the 'crims' where to finfd the Tracker............ :!:

Alan I did consider this, but it's so easy to find out that I bet most of them know already.

Mines got a tracker fitted - told the insurance company and it actually increased my premium by £120 - they couldn't give me a reason why! Bloody waste of time and money having one!

The tracker inspection on mine was £80 and included a man coming some distance (Essex to Kent) to inspect and test. He was here a good hour and replaced various bits including batteries and rewired some bits that were poorly installed.

My insurance company (Privilege) insisted on an active system so I don't know if they have charged me more.

Andi.
