Household motoring costs

I'd have thought you've got to add depreciation into it after fuel the single biggest cost

That is one reason about 5 years ago I stopped buying brand new cars! Buying my 7 month old Z4 I had already saved £10K!

My thoughts exactly breaker. By buying my Zed and the wife's 328 used. We missed out on $37,000 of depreciation. That's why I haven't bought new in a decade.

Something in the order of 15% for the two cars. Doesn't seem like a huge amount to me, given it's a combination of a means of transport and a hobby in my case. It also makes it slightly less than mortgage which is 15% to 20% in our case.

I wonder how that 12% in the Daily Wail article breaks down into petrol, finance, insurance etc.

This is partly how I justify my spend on cars. If I was into golf or football how much would I be throwing away on travel, season tickets, merchandise, club membership, brightly coloured V necks and a bag of sticks? I put the money into cars instead. I also very rarely drink/go out so even more money for pissing up the wall on motoring

About 16%

Love to know why diesel is so much more expensive at the moment, nearly 10 pence difference, first fill up tonight :D

The refinement process for diesel means that per barrel of oil you get less diesel than you would petrol. Say a barrel makes 60 litres of petrol, the same barrel will only produce 40 litres of diesel. Or so a friend that works in the oil industry told me. Therefor diesel is more expensive. I believe the tax on diesel in the UK is the same as the tax on petrol (both are way too high). Diesel is often cheaper in other countries because they generally have less tax on their fuel anyway although some do subsidise diesel as part of a government incentive purely because diesels are not as popular in every country as they are here in the UK.

so here's my question / as a percentage , how much of your household after tax income is spent on motoring ?
fuel,insurance,servicing,mot,tax etc

I still live with my family so my percentage is not household but still:

my percentage is 17.4% :(

Here are my calculations:

What do you mean "live with my family"? As in live with parents? I probably spent about 30-40% on cars when i lived with my parents but I was only 19 then, my wage was a lot less and the world was a different place.

not really sure but with carers allowance and DWP plus a small directors fee we do spend a lot on food and fuel and having to pay the higher road tax for the disco is always a nice surprise :o
plus when we had the high rise in diesel and living in a rural area our local station was charging nearly £1.70 a litre think we are at £1.50 a litre now.
Having to change my wife's motability car in a months time and that going to cost us over 4 grand plus half of our allowance every month so how long we can keep running the zed and the Disco will have to see.
but at the mo we will keep going
