I have had all sorts of hid replacements and adapters in mine, and I am currently running;
White 5000k LED Side lights
6000k 55w slim ballast HID from hids4u
(who i have used for years and have always had perfect results from)
6000k LED Full Beam from amazon but the adapters don't fit over the fan.
6000l LED Fogs, adaptor not needed they fit great.
They look really bright but they have very little reach in real life application.
Legally, your only issue is that HIDs must be housed in a projector.
MOT wise, they will fail if they don't self level, and have washers.
Depending on who does your MOT you can say you removed them when it was in and replaced them as soon as it passed "ehem"...
Here is the difference one side from the OEM.

Did the cover fit back onto the housing after installing the LEDs mentioned above? Considering them over a HID install.

Whilst I did a HID install and not the led.. You may have the same issue I did.
When I refitted the covers and sruff it turns out my rubber seal had not at all seated correctly again because it probably hadn't been taken off for many years and was 15 years old.
I ended up with my lights being very wet!
Replaced that back cover and dried them out and now have no issues. But the rubber was definitely dead.
Worth considering having new ones!

I actually have a small amount of condensation in one lamp housing anyway so new seals may be in order. If they are available for a reasonable price I will pick some up.
