Iv just bought a z4 3.0i on a 03 plate.

Its running lumpy and hunting for idle all the time.

The idle goes fine when I remove the oil cap and its fine then.
Any ideas much appreciated as im trying to avoid the dealers.
Many thanks
Steve ;)

Running lumpy is either a coil or spark plug which is no big issue.

Can also be a duff battery.

Not sure where how you decided to remove the oil cap or even think that was a good idea. Hopefully you didn't drive around without it.

Dealer or private purchase?

You're not supposed to run the engine, even on tick-over without the oil filler cap.

Needs diagnosing for fault codes as the issue as it could be any one of a dozen things from those mentioned above to various sensors, air leaks, hoses loose, etc.

If it runs fine with the oil filler cap off then it doesn't sound like coils/plugs battery to me, it sounds like a cream crackered engine breather.
Regards

Yeah nice easy fix luckily. Its been stood since 2012 due to the owner passing away so I expected a few niggles. If this is all there is I will be very happy.

Thanks again guys. ;)

supermarket fuel suposedly accounts for the demise of maf sensors, mind you i was told that by my local filling station so i guess he has an axe to grind

I've heard nothing but good reviews on Tesco Momentum. Doesn't stop me filling with V Power though ;)

Just filled up with momentum ready for the Autobahn run next week!
It's not going to be an economy run so I won't be boasting of mpg figures.
I can't see how supermarket fuel can damage the maf sensor either.

Agreed, doesn't it just have air blowing on it?
The injectors & fuel are further upstream I thought:

Hahaha, I,m sorry but what a load of crap, the maf sensor is between your air filter housing and throttle body and measures the volume of air entering the engine so the ecu can calculate the air/fuel mixture.

Well...that didnt work unfortunately. The code reader said maf. Iv bought a new maf but made no difference at all :(

It says now codes Po171 and po174

running lean bank1 and also running lean bank 2
