That’s not actually correct. The reinforcement plate is a two layer bonded aluminium construction. The topmost layer sits flush against the cross member, there is no clear air. There is 5mm or so clear air between the two layers. The stamped rectangle is deformable by design, so that the bottom
layer retains its structure when the car is jacked from this point. If you use the correct jacking puck, the deformation can almost be avoided altogether.
Ah yes, you and Gregory_tolson are right - the gap is between the two layers. Been a while since i worked on a non-M. That upper layer is obviously quite a serious structural component when you look at the bolt spec, so I guess the lower layer is to some extent sacrificial.

It's still very unsatisfactory - a bit like using emergency scissor jacks on pinch welds! I recall the rectangle being a different size/shape to the side points, so a standard rectangular puck adaptor doesn't fit. Some people recommend using a flat puck or even a block of wood but, as you say, it's almost avoiding deformation and not ruling it out. The M-inspired modification seems like a good idea.
 
I have been thinking about a design where you cut a round hole (say 60mm) through the deformation rectangle in the bottom layer, then screw a similar sized rubber puck through the top layer into the cross member (there is a M10 or M12 threaded hole in the cross member at exactly the right point). Then you have a permanent jacking point very similar to the Z4M.
That's what I did except I made a steel "puck", works great.

I jack the car up on one of the sill jacking points till it is high enough to get an axle stand under the the sill jacking point I am not using and my low jack under the tyre closest to the jack. Place an axle stand under the free jacking point (car as high as possible) and then jack the car up till level under the tyre nearest to jacking point I initially used. I then position the second axle stand. It sounds sketchy, but my jack is a very flat pad and it works really well for me with what I have available. I also use one of the specially made & moulded pucks that fit into the jacking point when using the jack too.
