help where can i get my vanos fixed-had crazy qoute!

I love this site. You guys are top notch  loads of options now. Andy -if I can get it cheaper and replacement parts I will definitely do that. I'm not 100 percent sure what's wrong with it as the garage just did a listen to the engine test :? and diagnosed as just vanos .what tests should I be asking the garage to do?

I would be dubious about the diagnosis unless they are an independent BMW specialist with an interest in ///M cars. I presume they aren't or they'd be fixing it for you!
It could be due to worn cam lobes, VANOS bolts or at a push bearing shells. Another trek for you but I've routinely taken three different BMWs to Phil Crouch at CPC Performance Engineering in Amersham. He has a great deal of experience rebuilding faulty VANOS units and will tell you immediately if that is your problem.

thanks for the heads up and yes your right didnt really trust the diagnosis. you just get that feeling don't you . Especially when I asked what he was going to fix and why . took him at least 30 seconds to answer and even then I could have thought of a better answer! will give cpc a call aswell cheers

Call around 0700h or you'll struggle to reach Phil himself as he likes to get his hands dirty not just stand back and run the company!

All good suggestions so far.

Also consider Technosport in NW London (straight down the M1) as the owner has an M3 Race car and is very familiar with the S54 and has allsorts of M cars there on a regular basis.

Im based in leicester....well oakham

Seeing that I am possibly going to buy a Z4M tomorrow, can you tell me how many miles your car has and how long have had the problem?

Going looking tomorrow (2 hour drive) and wanted to know what the Vanos noise sounds like.

I had Mr Vanos do mine as a precaution on my E46 M3 (44k, 55 plate) about 2 months ago - think it was about £650 cost which includes the oil hub change to a redesigned version so the tabs won't snap off.
No offence to people saying it was "fixed" on the Z4M, it wasn't, it was still the same Vanos fitted to any S54 with the same Oil disc Tab design problems, and same cam bolt issues, and same solenoid failures waiting to happen.

Don't think anyone said it was fixed on the Z4M. However the cam bolts are an updated version from BMW which are standard now, still no doubt potential part that can fail though, in terms of working loose if not torqued correctly.

Did you have the seals replaced / solenoid checked at the same time?
