Help please - wiring heated seats

I've got the retrofit instructions: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15374651/retrofit_heated_seats.pdf

Hi Paul

Thanks for getting back to me.
I think this is the link if I have copied it properly.
I am going to get a local auto electrician to sort out the electrics for me. It is way outside my limited capability. I would probably blow all the electrics if I tried. What I am trying to do is to gather as much information as possible to help him. My 2005 2.2 is unfortunately pre-wired for electric seats.
I think I have managed to source a wiring loom for the driver's seat. I found it on eBay tonight. Won't know for sure until it arrives. Unfortunately the guy had already sold the one for the passenger seat.

Thanks again for your help.
Kind Regards
Ian

Try that.

Thanks Paul. That link worked fine. All the instructions are there. Plus all the information and photographs in your excellent write-up will be really helpful too.

Thanks for your patience. I'll let you know how I get on.

Kind Regards

Ian

Hi,
Thanks for the helpful post all, but 'MrPT' I can't access your instructions in English any more. Is there any way you could post an active link for these?

'Fishy Dave',
Do you have the instructions in English still and is there any way you could post a link to them? I'm gonna try this bmw dealer in Lithuania mentioned in the other post on this but I'm struggling and thought I could maybe make the loom if I
Have the English instructions.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Sorry guys, scratch the last request. I didn't see this last link that worked.
Very helpful thanks for posting!

Also thanks IRD for you info on obtaining the loom from Lithuania in the other post. I managed to order one today.

Hi all! I have a 2003 z4 3.0i and I have been wishing to install heated seats for a while. I´ve ordered the retrofit kit for the X3 and I was wondering. Doest the pre face lift Z4 have the wiring in the seats already installed? So i just need to wire the seats to the control panel right?

Many thanks for all your help and this thread. It´s been very useful so far.

all the wiring is already there - no loom needed - it will just plug and play.

Just to add to Jamie's response, it was only the 'face-lift' (2006 onwards) Z4s that stopped 'pre-wiring' the looms for heated seats (and cruise control), which meant us 'face-lift' owners had the PITA job of sourcing the looms and retro-fitting them.

Thank you very much for your quick reply Jamie and Marlon. There´s one thing I don´t understand though. The pre-wiring means the heating elements are inside the seats, so i need then to "connect" the seats to a new control panel? Or does it mean that I just need to buy a new control panel with the heating seats control, and no wiring at all needs to be done?

The cruise control pre wiring is also great news, since I was planning to install that as well :)

Thanks! I just bought a panel from a UK vendor in eBay. It should work on a EU car with left hand drive?

Yeah, can't see a problem - just test the heated seats one at a time before you fix the panel in place to make sure the controls are connected to the correct seats. (My garage got it wrong first time and the right control was heating the left seat!)

Great thanks. Already ordered the panel, should arrive later this week. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for all your help!

yeah you need a panel - usually around 30 quid on ebay that again just plugs into the connector on the back ready to go

I received the panel last friday and swapped it for my old panel. However, when I press the heated seats button, all three lights switch on and off (green lights) and nothing happens. Any ideas why this is happening? Do i need to install any wiring apart from changing the panel?

Many thanks for all your help

Have a look at the plugs under the seats. Make sure that both ends of the plugs are populated. If the ends of the plugs are empty the car may not be pre-wired for heated seats. Mine was a pre-facelift with the standard non-electric seats and was not pre-wired. Not being particularly able in this area I needed an auto-electrician to sort it out for me.

Thanks! I will take a look today. How can I visually check if there´s indeed a pre installation in the car (i.e. mats inside the seats). Also, how can I check if the cabling is in place from the seats to the panel? What makes me wonder is why, when connecting the new panel with the heated seats button I get a light that turns on and then off on the heating indicators... My Z4 is from early 2003, so it´s one of the first ones produced.

I appreciate all your help.

Does anyone now if taking the mats from a heated seat and putting them onto an originally non heated seat is doable? (It's because my interior is a different colour than the leather of the heated seat I plan to buy)

Thanks!

Thanks!

I can't see why the heat pads won't fit as long as the seats are the same (sports or SE) and as yours i an early car, it should have the wires under the seats ready to plug in. Check on youtube about taking seat covers off

Thanks!

Theres a thread where someone refurbs a set of seats. To do it he removes the mats from another set and fits them to his own. I'll see if I can dig it up.
