Help Please,Roof Operation in the cold

I put mine down briefly this morning at 6am to stow my windbreak in the boot; and the outside temp was -2.... didnt think twice about whether it would work in the cold or not!

I don't think the car will allow you to move the roof if the tempertaure is below a certain value? I think it mentions this in the owners manual. :?

Well mine worked this morning at minus 1deg and I've had it dropped in lower temps than that. My car does live in the garage though so perhaps the mechanism itself is kept warmer than if it was outside? Saying that, I had the roof down one new year after the car being parked overnight in minus 8deg and it worked fine...

Thought about this thread today so tried it on the way home. Roof began cycle even when below freezing.

I can't recall the exact temp but I have put my top down and then back up for a picture a few times when it was well below freezing.

Mine just worked at Zero....and went straight back up again, I'm curious not mad!

I can't think why the hydraulics 'need protecting' as the fluid is designed to be stable over a huge range (like brakes), however if your soft top is frozen stiff I don't think it would do the fabric any good to fold it and could maybe create too much resistance for the motor?

According to my E89 manual, the hard top can't be operated when the temperature is below -10 C

Aparently it was -10 in Wales last night.. we need someone from Wales with an E89 to test BMW's theory :P
