Help Please,Roof Operation in the cold

I tested a Z4 today but the roof wouldn't operate because it was below 2degrees, Seemingly the sensor protects the hydraulic system whilst it's cold. Ambient Temp Sensor issue.

I thought this was BS so I phone BMW to confirm, they said its true as it also works when it's too hot.

Can anyone confirm this is the case, as I'm going back tommorow to see it again and hopefully its warmed up.

My dealer told me years ago that they wouldn't let the salesman operate the roofs below 10 degrees because of possible damage, seems a bit over cautious but 2 degrees seems perfectly feasible.

No a soft top, I phone Grassicks BMW and their Technician said it's true. The roof unhooked and the windows went down but never dropped.

I'm meant to be going back to try it tommorow, whilst the seller is trying to warm it up. It's 0 degrees in Scotland just now.

Hmm sounds like the roof motor is/was on the way out rather than anything else. If it was sensor-related then it wouldn't even start the cycle.

yep.. defo had mine down in sub-zero as point of principle

shocking incompetancy to say it's a sensor - you think they'd want the money for roof replacement :tumbleweed:

I'm getting the car at a bargin price and it has all the options fitted already, whats the repair costs on a roof?

A lot but why buy from someone who deals like this. Who knows what else could be wrong that they are happy to bullshit about!?

I have just checked the manual. RHT on E89 cannot be operated if the temperature is -10C.

you would be bloody brave (if not crazy) to even thing about it in that temperature

Don't worry. I will not try opening the roof/driving with the roof down until the temperature goes over +12C.

You have a point mate, I was needing some tough love advice, Hey Ho on the train tommorow to look at another one.

Shame really the one with the dodgy roof had every option availble and was only £6500.
