I know exactly what you mean and it really goes against the grain. Fortunately on the course I did, we used the instructors car. Using his paint gauge, we took off at most 5 microns wet sanding. From memory, the clearcoat was 60 microns thick at the start. He had used the same car for 4 or 5 wet sanding courses before the one I was on. Just keep away from edges as the paint / clearcoat is thinner there.
