HELP - Macbook Pro Charger Broken

So last night, mid gig my laptop charger decided to pack in (break in the cable).

I now need a new PSU, does anyone have any experience in replacing one without paying apple prices? I have seen "genuine" ones on the bay for around £36 but not sure they can be trusted.

I have a 2012 13" i7 Macbook Pro with "L" shape magsafe connection.

Any advice?
 
Personally, I'd not save a few quid.

It's a lot of money worth of laptop to plug some unknown piece of kit into... Has the cable given up or have you mullered it?

If it's given up you may get a decent discount from apple if you ask nicely?
 
I'm reminded of the woman in China who was recently electrocuted (as in, dead like) by a fake Apple iPhone charger. I'd spend a bit more to get the genuine article from a legit source.

Yeah, quality costs and I wouldn't risk any ebay electrical shite! Not only could it electrocute you, even more important is it could harm your Macbook!!!!!

One of my dogs chewed the end of my cable, but it still works. I'm risking it by using it, but will have to take the plunge soon I reckon - and when I do, it will be Apple.
 
If it's just a cable break, I'd repair it myself but I know some people don't feel confident doing that sort of thing so why not get one of the universal switchable chargers from somewhere like Maplin? They come with connectors for lots of different laptops and can charge virtually any laptop - we keep a couple hanging around at work for when guests or trainers have forgotten their own changer

Will update after talking to apple as it does seem to be common and may just help others out.
 
These people are good and have had a few adapters off them with no problems.

Ps adapters I've had were for Sony and HP but worked fine.
 
Apple has the unique magnetic connector, never seen a third party with this.

If it's a genuine fault my bet is you will get a replacement foc.
However if you've damaged it through misuse then be prepared to pay.....

Ahhh, ignore me then :wink: We're not Apple users, they're pretty but can't run the sort of heavy-duty cat modelling software we rely on

The original 'quality' item only lasted a year or so, that's quality?

I'm not an Apple fan but my daughter is and everything from her ipod to phone to book have had problems with chargers in double quick time. I've resorted to to replacements from UK based web sites with decent reviews and they have generally lasted longer than the originals, same goes for my Sony laptops.

I had this with both a HP and a Sony Vaio Laptop in that the charger conveniently gave up just outside the warranty, I think basically they have a short service life for a purpose i.e. charge you 80 quid for a replacement hence why I went to Battery.co.uk and the replacement lasted years. The HP charger was a farce as I ordered a replacement from HP and they sent the wrong model charger. I rang them and they said they stopped making that particular charger and my laptop was 16 months old :cry: The HP charger gave a nice bang and plume of smoked when it failed.

Spoke to apple today, nothing FOC but a discounted rate of £19.99 to £29.99 (I guess it's going to be the lower as I need 60w).

I'm getting a call back tomorrow at 12.30 to arrange.

My laptop is a real work horse, it's lasted well over 2 years. I will however take more care of the psu now I know it's problematic.

Those who break apple items simple don't treat them with any manner of care. I frequently see people I know plug their phone in, then pull it to the end of the earth to attempt to write a text/make a phone call whilst it's plugged in.

I've had every iPhone since the iPhone 3 and have never broken a charger, not to mention 2 iPad's, 1 macbook pro that's three years old and has never missed a beat and still lasts 6.5 hours on battery minimum.

UPDATE:

Got a call back today and was told I could pay £60 for a psu with 3 month warranty or £65 for one with a 12 month warranty.

I obviously didn't accept this and asked to talk to a supervisor. She asked me to email some pictures of the split wire, a short time later (within 10 minutes) I got a call back and they agreed to replace FOC!!

A hold was taken on my CC until they revive my broken psu but that's not an issue. Happy with the result but disappointed I had so much trouble getting it sorted.
 
Depends how you use it - a piece of cable is a piece of cable! Its not gonna break for no reason. Was it bent/kinked at any time in the past? I've had problems with all my iPhones, my MBP and my iMac that Apple have sorted under warranty. Never had any issues with any of our iPads. But the issues have been hardware, not cables - the only reason my mbp cable is on its last legs is due to chihuahua teeth!

My MBP is a mid 2009 model, so my cable has lasted over 4 years.

Can we see the picture of yours?
 
And to clarify....when I said quality costs etc instead of ebay crap, I was referring to the cheap imports that you get...the ones that can be wired to electrocute. Buying a genuine product via ebay is different to what I meant, but I didn't explain that.
