Hello, just paid the deposit on a Z4.

If you can, the 2006 or later facelift 3.0i with N52 engine is the best. You can upgrade the 3.0i to 3.0si with retrofitting the 3 stage manifold and simply flash 3.0si tune to boost 215hp to 265hp. But this setup only seems only being sold in US. In UK you can find N52 engine facelift 2006 and later 2.5i and upgrade to 2.5si with 3 stage manifold and flash. Will boost 174hp to 215hp. Plus the facelift model had steering control button and 6 speed automatic trans, also more advanced DSC system module.
Just saw a 2003 at the Facebook marketplace, and the roof motor hasn't been moved. Alan? Alan?

FWIW we never got a facelift 3.0i in the UK, they were all 3.0Si. But he's right about the facelift 2.5i upgrade to 2.5Si power. The bonus with facelift cars is all the Sport models have the M-Sport seats as standard.

Any chance there's a video that recorded your method? 15 mins to relocate the motor sounds fascinating.

I charge $1000 now to help other Z4 owner around my area to rebuild the hinge also relocating their motor, relocating sometimes will cost about an hour or more especially if someone elses had opened the motor casing previously and sealed the top with loads of tapes.
It’s quite simple. Unbolt the roof ring about half way round. Unbolt the hinge. Unclip the loom fasteners. Pop out the roof seal and lift it up

I did this method in about an hour having never done it before and taking my time, I gave up with the break the motor free method after about 10 minutes as it seemed impossible or very much likely to damage something, when I saw how the casing is attached with a screw and cable ties I'm glad I partially lifed the roof.

I found the most difficult part was clipping the hoop back into place

That would suit me to be honest. I spoke to John yesterday and we couldn’t tie up a date between us before my wife has an operation next week, (then I’ll be unable to travel for a week or so) so if you buy it and want to bring it to me (by the M4/M5 interchange) I’d be happy to sort it for you.

I’ll PM you my phone number

Alan

Is there any thread demonstrated this method?

What do you think about this MOT, I am concerned about the SRS light as it was mentioned hereView attachment 297872
The one I’d be concerned about is the SRS/airbag warning. The MOT says the airbag warning lamp doesn’t illuminate during the self-test, which isn’t normal. My first thought is that there’s probably a fault in the SRS system, and someone’s covered it up by blocking the dash light. It might be something relatively simple, but it could also be an airbag module, seat occupancy sensor, seatbelt pretensioner. You’ll probably need to plug in a scanner that can read the SRS module to diagnose exactly what’s wrong before you know what it’ll cost to fix. I’d definitely investigate that before buying the car.

Remember my very first comment on page one of this thread? It seems my fears are well founded.
I would not proceed until you know exactly what codes the airbag system is showing. The modules are only available secondhand and approaching £200 each. Then you need them coded in.
Get the codes and report back, but I would NOT be paying any more or taking the car until you know what's what.
While they are reading the codes, get them to note the part numbers of the three airbag modules as well, then I can advise if they are rare ones or not.

My original plan was to go there on Sunday to collect the car. I will take a scanner with me then. Do you have any suggestions for one that I can buy before Sunday?

My go to would be an Autophix 5900, or 7910.
Not sure you'll get one before Sunday though?
Any members local to you that could lend one?

If you like, I'll DM you my mobile number and we can discuss the codes before you make your decision.

Seems a risk with the airbag light, but also seems a knowledgeable Z4 dealer in that he knows the cars well and uses Alan to do roof motors. I’d speak to him and ask him to investigate the SRS issue.

Agreed.
Unfortunately I’m away for two weeks from tomorrow, but still available if you want to call me today when you view it.
Pretty good chance I can sort whatever the issue is so if the dealer is stuck, strike a deal and we can look into it when I get back.
If you tell him I’m ‘Airbag Alan’ that may help 🤣🤣🤣

After a series of discussions and price reductions, I just collected the car. Thanks for the answers and information! Now I will be slowly getting everything done. I will post proper pics during the week

Congratulations.
Give me a shout if you need any assistance with the airbag light.
